Miles Macadam information
1. Grouted Macadam
Surface Courses
Miles Macadam - providing the ONLY BBA certificated Grouted Macadam’s in
the U.K.
Since 1970 Miles Macadam has gained national recognition for its proprietary processes and
procedures, improved sustainability and its drive to reduce maintenance and remedial works.
Minimising disruption, reducing natural resource use and the environmental and safety
impact of surfacing, have all become more prominent in the last decade and are
incorporated in the company’s designs and aims. Coupled with this the company maintains
to lower risk as the longer a product lasts, the less hazard exposure there is to roadwork
operatives and the general public.
Current certifications held include:
BBA accreditation
BBA / HAPAS certification
Scheme 14 and 16 accreditation under the National Highways Sector Scheme for
Quality Management in Highways Works
ISO9001:2008
The processes Miles Macadam offer are all impervious, which will slow degradation and
prolong product life. Confidence in its products performance and value for money is further
enhanced with extended maintenance guarantees.
Residential and Rural Roads
Milepave is HAPAS certificated and provides a flexible, impervious surface course with a
long design life for the resurfacing of flexible carriageways in residential and rural areas.
Concrete Carriageways
Milepave for concrete carriageways is a system incorporating sealing of the existing joints,
improvement of the running surface with an impervious surface course layer, post surface
treatment of the joints and maintenance of the surface and joints thereafter. This ensures
that the road integrity is protected against water ingress for the life of the product. Concrete
industrial sites can be treated exactly the same way by substituting Hardipave for Milepave.
Junctions, Industrial Roads and Arterial Routes
Hardipave is the process most commonly used to provide a long term solution, having a
high strength rigid finish that will not deform. Certificated under BBA/HAPAS, the product
has a short curing time to minimise disruption.
Roundabouts
HAPAS certificated Hardipave is the product recommended for roundabouts. The rigid
surface resists the
actions of turning traffic and the likelihood of surface fretting.
2. Bus Lanes, Laybys and Stations
Miles Macadam is one of the leading suppliers of surfacing solutions for bus related use in
the UK, as its materials are cementitious offering fuel and deformation resistance, hard
wearing and easily installed. Hardicrete is the product most frequently laid in bus stations
since 1975 and is currently used by TfL (Transport for London) as a system of choice for
their bus network. Hardipave is commonly chosen for bus lanes and laybys, with similar
attributes to Hardicrete but a shorter curing period. Hardicrete and Hardipave have been
certificated by the BBA (British Board of Agrément).
Promenades and Seafronts
Bituminous seafront areas exposed to tidal wash or salt spray are prone to faster
degradation than other carriageways. Hardicrete, Hardipave and Hardicoat have all been
used for the past 35 years on these sites, to provide a high strength surface course with
resistance to salt attack and oxidation.
Car Parks
Hardicoat is a unique process specifically designed for car parks, providing a thin surface
course with fuel resistance and high strength. With its cementitious finish it will not oxidise
and is impermeable, thereby providing a long lasting solution.
Airfields
Hardicrete and Hardipave have numerous advantages for all areas of Airfield surfacing in
providing high strength and rigidity, fuel resistance, resistance to high temperatures and
standing loads, with quick installation and commissioning.
Waste Sites
Hardicrete and Hardipave have many years of proven service in this industry, resisting
leachate and contamination attack. With high strength, they can withstand the rigours
associated with blading and HGV turning. Again fast installation and the speed of
commissioning minimises disruption.
Ports and Distribution
Hardicrete and Hardipave have, again, decades of use in these sectors of industry. Their
high strength will ensure long term performance in the harshest of environments. Their
ability to be laid over existing surfaces enable maintenance issues to be carried out with the
minimum of disruption.
3. Grouted Macadam
Surface Courses
Grouted Macadam’s are not a new idea and have been around since the 1950’s an
awareness of their usage is not perhaps as widespread as it should be.
They are particularly effective at providing solutions to many of today’s trafficking problems
Their properties are:
• Fuel and oil resistant
• Chemical and leachate resistant
• Improved load spreading ability
• Scuff resistant - power steering etc.
• Impermeable, semi rigid, with no visible joints
• They do not oxidise
• Laid between 30mm and 50mm
• Installation times against concrete
• Reduced “life” costs
Where they are used successfully:
• High stress sites.
• Time constrained sites ( requiring repair when site must be kept open )
• Refurbishment of existing surfaces.
• Planned or urgent Maintenance.
• Problem sites.
• Channelized traffic.
Typical examples:
• Promenades and sea defences.
• Industrial estates.
• Distribution / service yards.
• Bulk Storage Warehouses floors.
• Bus infrastructure works.
• Waste industry, transfer stations and household waste sites.
• Roundabouts.
• Ports and Airports
