As Auckland grows, so does the competition and as competition 
grows it becomes more and more important that you establish 
your brand online as fast as possible. This page was created to 
explain what exactly SEO is, what it can do for your business and 
how you can start dominating your region to acquire more 
customers than ever before. 
 
 
What Is SEO?
Before I jump into SEO Auckland, let me first explain what SEO is 
and what it can mean for your business. ​SEO ​stands for ​search 
engine optimisation​. It essentially means how optimised and 
trusted your website is in the eyes of search engines and this is 
made up from a lot of different factors such as​ backlinks, domain 
authority, page authority, keyword density​ and a whole bunch of 
other buzzwords with my favourite being the ‘trust funnel.’ 
 
When people talk about ​search engine optimisation​ they only talk 
about Google and I’ve had a lot of people asking why that is. The 
reason why is because Google is dominating the search engine 
industry. Google search makes up around 65% of total searches. 
Microsoft sites make up around 20%, Yahoo! makes up around 
13% and others like AOL make up the rest. So the mindset 
usually is, why focus on Bing when that only makes up 20% of the 
search engine market? Let’s just focus on Google and gain the 
biggest benefit possible. 
 
But there is also another reason. Most search engines (especially 
the big two) have similar ranking factors. This means if you’re 
going up the ranks on Google, you’re most likely going to be 
going up the ranks on Bing as well! Yeah, that’s two birds with 
one stone (which I recently realized is a horrible saying!). 
 
What Should You Look Out 
For In An SEO Company? 
 
There are two big things to keep in mind when you’re looking for a 
SEO company. 
 
White Hat or Black Hat SEO? 
 
There are two big methods of SEO. White hat covers all the 
legitimate search engine optimisation companies. These are 
companies that will follow Google’s guidelines and play by the 
rules. They will build your rankings slowly and sustainable and 
within a few months to a year you can dominate a keyword and 
gain all the juicy benefits that come along with that. 
 
Black hat on the other hand doesn’t follow the Google guidelines. 
These guys will set up a whole bunch of duplicate sites and link 
them all to you to try get a quick win. They set up proxy servers to 
separate IPs, they spam links on blog comments, they create 
millions of ‘spun articles,’ all in an attempt to rank quickly for a 
certain keyword. Now although the keywords ​do ​get ranked 
quickly, they will often get removed by Google within a few 
months and your website will be banned from the search engines. 
This is because the black hat SEOs basically cheated their way to 
the top. 
 
So although white hat SEO will be more expensive, it is the ​only 
way your business should be doing SEO. Don’t get lulled into the 
sales pitch where businesses guarantee first page rankings within 
a few weeks. This is most likely going to be a black hat SEO 
company! Companies that promise and deliver solid results over a 
period of time are the perfect choice for a company. SEO isn’t a 
‘get rich overnight’ technique, but it is one of the most valuable 
investments you can make for your business because once you’re 
ranked well, you’re getting a ton of free leads delivered directly to 
your website. 
 
Local or International? 
 
Now if you’re a business that is targeting New Zealand, or lets 
even say you’re an SEO company only after the Auckland market, 
it makes sense that you should choose a local SEO company 
right? Well most businesses get lulled into the same false 
promises by the overseas international companies. 
 
When you’re building your SEO, Google takes into account how 
relevant your attempts are. If you’re building some backlinks for a 
hairdressing website in Auckland for example, Google will make 
sure that the websites linking to your business are related. If the 
websites linking to your business are in New Zealand and are 
about hair, then Google will place a high relevance on it and 
therefore you will get ‘bonus points’ towards your SEO. 
 
If the websites linking to you are Indian websites that are about 
finance, then you’re not going to have a very good time. Google 
will see that the websites aren’t relevant to hairdressing, nor is it 
in New Zealand so it won’t give you much link juice from that. 
 
What Should I Focus On 
First? 
 
Many companies come to me asking where their efforts should be 
focused on, their local market, or the wider market. Whether 
you’re based in Mt Eden and want to target Auckland as a whole, 
or you’re a New Zealand business that wants to target the world, 
you should definitely dominate your local market first. 
 
The reason why is because nine times out of ten, it’s easier, more 
affordable and you’ll be getting much more repeat business as 
opposed to trying to acquire new customers (which is usually 
more expensive and takes longer). 
 
95% of the business in New Zealand haven’t even started building 
their local SEO presence. 60% of the SEO companies in 
Auckland, and in New Zealand don’t focus on this either! It’s a 
brand new feature that Google released to ​help ​small to medium 
enterprises improve their businesses presence online. ​It is an

What Are Some Terms You 
Should Know? 
  
● Keyword​: These are the terms you type into search 
engines. If you’re searching for SEO companies in Auckland 
and you type in Google ‘SEO Auckland’, then SEO Auckland 
is your keyword. 
● Keyword Density​: This is the measurement in percentage 
from the number of times a keyword or phrase appears 
compared to the total number of words in a web page. 
Google uses this factor to get a better idea on which subject 
you’re focusing on. 
● Domain Authority​: This is how trusted the domain is. Like I 
said before, this is dependent on a ton of different factors 
such as backlinks, on­page optimisation, keyword density, 
title tags, domain descriptions etc. 
● Page Authority​: This is how trusted the particular page of a 
domain is. For example although the BigBangly domain may 
be a 7/10, this page may only be a 5/10 because it’s still 
fairly new. 
● Trust Funnel​: This is the amount of ‘trust’ that flows 
between a website that is linking to you, and your website.
