British businesses have not been able to adopt cloud computing as
much as they would like, due to a range of issues such as data
protection, legislation and regulation.
This was the finding of a study by IT security and risk assessment firm
WideAngle NTT Com Security, which found more than a quarter of
the people responsible for making decisions on cloud adoption at
firms considered these issues to be a barrier to it, Computer Weekly
reports.
2. A third of respondents said these concerns have slowed the pace of
adoption and 29 per cent agreed they have had an impact "to some
extent", meaning 86 per cent of those taking part in the survey have
been held back in some way from moving swiftly to the use of the
cloud.
By comparison, these concerns have affected 76 per cent of the 700
firms firms across all the countries in the survey, which were based in
the UK, North America, Germany, Scandinavia, Singapore, Japan and
Hong Kong.
3. Global director of secure strategy at WideAngle Garry Sidaway said:
“Cloud is a well-established and maturing technology, but levels of
adoption still vary across different geographies.
"With increasingly complex data laws in the UK, it is become something
of a minefield for businesses looking to become more agile and
efficient using cloud, but perhaps feeling they are being held back.”
4. Tom Salkield, WideAngle's director of professional services, told
Computer Weekly many UK firms are "lagging behind" because they
have taken a conservative approach towards the adoption of new
technology. Those who have introduced the cloud, by contrast, fully
recognise its value in terms of flexibility and cost savings, he added.
Despite these factors, the report found 36 per cent of UK firms had
taken on some kind of cloud computing in the past two years,
compared with 34 per cent of German firms and just 18 per cent of
enterprises in Hong Kong and Scandinavia.
5. Writing in Cloud Computing News recently, vice-president of product
management for Global Cloud Services Simon Withers said firms using
the cloud through services provided by a data protection vendor had
little to fear on the security front, as such a supplier would have access
to the best expertise in this area.
