3. PROBLEM TREE
A problem tree
provides an overview
of all the known causes
and effects or
consequences to an
identified problem.
4. CONSTRUCTING A PROBLEM TREE
1. The problem or issue is written in
the centre and becomes the 'trunk'
of the tree or the āfocal problemā or
ācore problemā.
2. Identify the causes of the focal
problem - these become the roots.
3. Identify the consequences, which
become the branches.
5. PROBLEM TREE ANALYSIS
Also called Situational analysis or just Problem
analysis
Helps to find solutions by mapping out the
anatomy of cause and effect around an issue
8. ADVANTAGES OF PROBLEM TREE:
ā¢ The problem can be broken down into
manageable and definable chunks.
ā¢ More understanding of the problem.
ā¢ Establish whether further information,
evidence or resources are needed.
ā¢ Present issues - rather than apparent,
future or past issues - are dealt with
and identified
ā¢ Build a shared sense of

social system or not.
Anticipated Vs. Unanticipated consequences
14. OThe undesirable, indirect, and
unanticipated consequences of an
innovation usually go together, as
