34. What’s happening online? … in Coventry, England…Mary Bale, 45, found herself caught in the crosshairs of the reputation executor that is the web this week after a surveillance video of her placing a cat in a garbage bin went viral. Now, the Internet is replete with parodies, groups and spin-offs dedicated to bringing Bale down. According to The New York Times , Lola the cat was discovered unhappily yowling in a garbage bin outside the home of owners Stephanie and Daryll Mann. In hopes of discovering who had trashed kitty, the couple looked at security footage of the area, which showed an unidentified middle-aged woman petting the cat, and then dropping it in the trash. The couple posted the vid online, naturally, in an attempt to find out who the woman was. Subsequently, Bale received death threats , and information like her address and her boss’s phone number were spread around the web. Although Bale was placed under police protection (due to the aforementioned death threats) she did issue an apology yesterday after Facebook was forced to take down a group titled “Death to Mary Bale.”

49. Your Turn Define 21 st Century Learning and 21 st Century Teaching?
50. 21 st Century Learners Traditional schools involved teachers and textbooks delivering information to students, and students reflecting that information back. To better serve their future, today’s classrooms should facilitate teaching and learning as a conversation – two-way conversations between teachers and learners, conversations between learners and other learners, conversations among teachers, and new conversations between the classroom and the home and between the school and its community. - David Warlick Page 3
60. Textbook limitations How many of you said: “I can’t wait for the first TEXTBOOK to come out with information and lesson plans on the Chile miner rescue?
61. Classrooms without walls Read articles from Chile on the Miners – as news happens Listen live to radio stations in the country of the event
62. Classrooms without walls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTv9xC_sW0o Listen and watch news as it happens from anywhere in the world
63.
64. 21 st Century Learning ≠ Computers Pg. 59 “ Electronic classroom tools such as PowerPoint presentations, online videos, and high-tech presentation equipment were still tied to the same material in the same school environment. Certainly these tools made education more interesting and allowed for opportunities to present content in new and different ways, but they were still tied to static material presented in a static learning environment. Today’s learners need something more attuned to their daily lifestyles – connected, and often virtual. That’s where mobile learning comes into play.”
67. Your Turn How should Assessment and Evaluation change?
68. Assessment and Evaluation Assessment as Learning ePortfolios Embedded assessment in the learning process Redesign assessment beyond memorization to assess what students can do with the content
69. 21 st Century Learning ≠ Computers Pg. 131 “ We need better summative tests and formative evaluations that measure a combination of content knowledge, basic skills, higher order thinking skills, deeper comprehension and understanding, applied knowledge, and 21 st century skills performance. Evaluations embedded into ongoing learning activities that provide timely feedback and suggest additional learning activities that can improve understanding and performance would also be very helpful”.

109. Mashable – Staying Current Interesting Facts for a 21 st Century Conversation
110. Mashable – Staying Current The latest numbers from eMarketer project that advertisers will spend nearly $1.7 billion in the U.S. on social networking sites in 2010. Worldwide, spending will hit $3.3 billion according to the report. The numbers represent a significant bump up from estimates published by the research firm at the end of last year, when it projected $1.3 billion would be spent on the space in the U.S. Not surprisingly, eMarketer sees about half of that money (in the U.S.) going to Facebook, with MySpace continuing to see a smaller share of the pie. Separately, the firm estimated that Facebook’s 2010 revenue would hit $1.2 billion in a report published last week. Earlier this month, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said that some of the social network’s biggest advertisers had boosted ad spending by 10x this year; a trend that’s apparent in the eMarketer report.
111. Mashable – Staying Current This past weekend, Calvin Klein Jeans replaced three of its billboards — two in downtown New York and one on Sunset Boulevard in LA — not with another racy montage of scantily clad models, but with a bright red QR code under the words “Get It Uncensored.” Passersby can use their smartphones to snap a picture, which will pull up an exclusive, 40-second commercial featuring models Lara Stone, “A.J.,” Sid Ellisdon, Grayson Vaughan and Eric Anderson. After the spot plays, viewers can then share the code with their Facebook and Twitter networks. QR codes are increasingly appearing in advertisements as a way to increase engagement with consumers. Although already common in Japan (where they were originally invented), they do not appear in many advertisements — much less take up an entire billboard.
112. Mashable – Staying Current When news of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s death was revealed on Tuesday morning, it was too late for Sports Illustrated to change the cover photo of its print edition, featuring basketball star Lebron James and two of his new teammates. It was not, however, too late to alter the cover of the iPad edition of this week’s issue. The cover was accompanied by an article by Tom Verducci, which iPad readers can access alongside the original LeBron cover story. Verducci’s piece will be made freely available on SI.com later this week so that print subscribers and purchasers — as well as anyone else who wants to read the story, for that matter — can read it before the next issue. The cover change has interesting implications for the future of publishing on the iPad.
113. Mashable – Staying Current Apple has just posted its Q3 earnings for fiscal year 2010 and the company has once again bested its own records, this time reporting an astounding $15.7 billion in revenue and a net quarterly profit of $3.35 billion. Apple sold 3.47 million Macs in the quarter, which is a new quarterly record for the company, and 8.4 million iPhones. iPhone sales were up 61% year-over-year. Apple’s newest product, the iPad , sold 3.27 million units. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in the company’s statement, “It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4.” The quarter ended on June 26, 2010, just two days after the iPhone 4 was released, which makes the sales figure all the more impressive. This quarter — perhaps more than any other — Apple has faced big competition in the U.S. from the likes of the Google-backed Android platform.
114. Mashable – Staying Current Ford Motor Company is breaking with tradition in a big way. The company has been leaving digital breadcrumbs on the Ford Explorer Facebook Page, and in just a few days they’ll take to the web — instead of an auto show — for an all-day Facebook event to unveil the redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer. On July 26, Ford, along with Mike Rowe of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs series, will use Facebook to reveal the 2011 Ford Explorer. The online event will coincide with a big offline reveal in several cities across the nation, but this marks the first time a major car company will forgo the auto show for a web unveiling. Scott Monty, Ford’s head of social media, tells us that this is a very “comprehensive online play” that extends beyond just Facebook and involves several other web-centric elements that the company cannot reveal just yet. Monty speaks enthusiastically when he says that, “This is a really really different Explorer, and we wanted to reveal it in a really really different way.”
116. Mashable – Staying Current Harvard research director Carrie James took the stage at Mashable’s Social Good Summit earlier today to encourage us all to mentor young people on using social media for social good. The online behaviors of youth and how to improve and correct them are part of how James feels new media can be used to address the world’s challenges. To further this mission, James has activity been working with Harvard colleagues on the GoodPlay Project, a study on the ethical sensibilities of digital youth. The study explores youth identity, privacy, ownership, authority, credibility and participation. In their research, the team has found that most young people are devoid of ethical thinking or consideration for others when using the web. It’s a sobering reality that James hopes to change. James believes this is an untapped opportunity and suggests a number of actionable steps that we can take to change the way young people approach and use social technologies.
117. Mashable – Staying Current Apple’s Steve Jobs has taken the stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco to make a slew of announcements related to iOS, Apple TV, iTunes and the iPod. First though, he dropped some big stats on the state of the iOS ecosystem. According to Jobs, Apple has sold more than 120 million iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. This is up from 100 million devices just three months ago. What may be more impressive is that Apple is activating 230,000 new iOS device every single day . That’s more than the number that Google touted in May of 100,000 Android device activations daily (though that number has likely grown significantly higher since then). Unsurprisingly, the App Store is also on fire. Jobs announced that 6.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store, and the pace of downloads is now at 200 apps per second. 25,000 of the applications in the app store are now iPad apps. Apple’s retail stores are also growing. There are now 300 Apple stores in the world, including new ones in Shanghai and Paris. Apple Growth
118. Mashable – Staying Current Mark Zuckerberg is donating $100 million to the Newark public school system. The donation will be the first part of a foundation intended improve U.S. education. Zuckerberg will announce the contribution Friday on The Oprah Winfrey Show , where he will be joined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Some will call the donation calculated. The timing of the announcement is in sync with the October 1 release of The Social Network , based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires , neither of which protrays Zuckerberg in the most favorable manner. The donation could also be aimed at counteracting any negative stigma that could arise from his new rank on the Forbes 400. The fact of the matter is that Mark Zuckerberg just donated $100 million of his own personal wealth to one of the country’s worst school systems.
119. Mashable – Staying Current Location-based networking service Loopt has just updated its iPhone app to add deep integration with Facebook Places , making it easy to see all of your friends status updates and checkins, whether they use Loopt or not. Lots of services — like Foursquare and SCVNGR — have already implemented Facebook Places support into their apps. What we appreciate about Loopt’s approach is that other than a Facebook watermark over a user’s name and the color of the map point, the experience for using Loopt is basically the same whether you are connecting only with other Loopt members or linking it to Facebook Places.
120. Speak Up National Findings Click on the image to download the document Page 4 – Social-based learning – students want to leverage emerging communications and collaboration tools to create and personalize networks of experts to inform their education process. Un-tethered learning – students envision technology-enabled learning experiences that transcend the classroom walls and are not limited by resource constraints, traditional funding streams, geography, community assets or even teacher knowledge or skills. Digitally-rich learning – students see the use of relevancy-based digital tools, content and resources as a key to driving learning productivity, not just about engaging students in learning.
121. Speak Up National Findings Click on the image to download the document Page 16 – “Meeting students’ desires for socially-based, un-tethered, digitally rich learning experiences requires educators to address head on key infrastructure and funding challenges, policies around technology use and in particular, the use of students’ personal devices, and the ongoing need for new approaches for training teachers, both in-service and pre-service”
123. The Millennial Generation Page 21– “Rather than simply catching “digital ADD”, many of us are developing neural circuitry that is customized for rapid and incisive spurts of directed concentration. While the brains of today’s Digital Natives are wiring up for rapid-fire cyber searches, the natural circuits that control the more traditional learning methods are neglected and gradually diminished. The pathways for human interaction and communication weaken as customary one-on-one people skills atrophy”
124.
125. Electronic Social Media Policy We encourage our staff to be online to role model for our students
126. Impact of Wireless Access “ I am part of a pilot project using 15 Apple iPod touches in grade 9 applied Geography at St. Patrick's High School. The use of these devices has included applications of Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google research types of maps. The class has completed assignments that involve use of Google Earth to learn about latitude and longitude, map types and geographic features of parts of Canada. Each student was able to view numerous sites that highlight maps and graphs about weather and climate data. None of this would have been possible using overbooked computer labs and text based/wall map resources”. “ I have used Smart phones to allow instant research in the classroom... If the information is not crucial that they memorize but is background information on a text, it can be quite powerful. For example, we are currently looking at Animal Farm, and I needed to provide some context regarding the Russian Revolution. Some of the students were not getting it, so in 2-3 minutes they had looked up relevant information on the topic (example: Leon Trotsky) and were able to give some background immediately “ Lots of students use their cell phones and iPods as agendas” “ In our Math classes many students use them for doing mathematical problems, no longer any excuse that they don't have calculators in their classroom” “ I have used IPODs with a splitter in the classroom, so that students can listen to a lesson, a movie, etc. together”
127. A new generation ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjJg9NfTXos How are you changing to meet the needs of a new generation of learners?

Editor's Notes
The Intro slide focuses on skills that the new digital natives need to succeed in the 21 st century. It’s important to remember that we are already 10 years into the 21 st century. The key skills are higher order – we are not looking to prepare students to memorize and recite facts which are readily available to them from any search over the Internet.
Provide background re: Ontario educator Give background re: teaching experience Story of first year teaching – Grade 13 Economics, Grade 13 Religion, Grade 10 basic math team teaching, Fresh Start Intro to Business, Grade 9 P.E., and choice of Spanish or Computer programming

Review the 3 main priorities for the Board Add Catholic Graduate Expectations Add 21 st Century Learner
Discuss the Catholic Graduate Expectations Mention that most of the documents in the presentation are “hot links” so when they click on theme they will either be taken to the website where the document is located or they will be taken to the document itself
Picture of “typical class” How much have things changed – desks/rows/chalkboards/pencil and paper
Mention that they are to talk to the person or people near them - We have 3 hours together today so we need to have lots of interaction
How has it stayed the same – no time to discuss but mention a few points of how I feel the structure has remained consistent Now mention that today’s grade 3’s will graduate in the year 2020 In our Board last year we were calling the grade 2s the “lucky 2’s” since last year’s grade 2s will graduate in 2020

Clearly the world has changed in the last 10 years since the start of the 21 st Century How good of a job has the education sector done at keeping up with and taking advantage of these changes?
Ask the question – why are you in education? Click Link – watch video “Mr. Winkle” (Mention that the link will take them to the video if they have an Internet connection if they choose to use the presentation at a later date) Ask question “Think about your high school experience – was it very different from the classroom that you are currently teaching in?” Now think about the students who are currently in grade 3 (age 8/9) – they will be the class of 2020 – what should their high school experience look like?

We can look at the last 5 years to see how much the world has changed and the shifts in traditional power Ask how many have seen the Facebook movie – or read the Accidental Billionaire or read the FaceBook effect? Explain how Facebook started and how Mark Zuckerberg turned down several million dollars when he was 20 and turned down 1 billion dollars later on. As a 19 year old he wanted to “pick up girls” and then he wanted to change the world.
Mention about finding this book in my aunt’s basement when going through her old teaching materials In 1951 we taught people how to use a phone including Telephone manners proper etiquette for holding and dialing, how to use the phone
Today we are quick to comment about the “rudeness” of students and adults when Their cell phone goes off during church they are speaking loudly in a public space on their cell phone they text on their phone while eating dinner, while engaged in a conversation with someone else - they photograph inappropriate things using their cell phone - they “sext” or send inappropriate and often revealing pictures of themselves to their boyfriend/girlfriend Where are the adults When a 12 or 13 year old gets a cell phone, who reviews rules with them and talks about etiquette When do children see adults using cell phones appropriately
In 21 st Century Learning – learning can take place in many locations and in a variety of ways My preferred method includes: Listening to audio books while I drive or while I take care of other things like cutting the grass This is an interesting book from a Catholic perspective because it really speaks to the lack of values in an Internet age and the use of the Internet to humiliate others
Examples from the book Don’t Date Him Girl This sample is Darian Hatcher Dating a girl from Vancouver while married Comments from others What about non-truths, what about “regular people” Can’t erase the Internet – digital life remains forever, whether it is true or not Our Lawyer – The litmus test is not whether the student pissed you off or not, it is whether they have acted in a liable manner – they have the right to express their opinion – even if they don’t like you
The book mentions this site – bitter waitresses Can comment on poor tippers Very rude, mean comments Ex. Poor tip, on anniversary – waitress called couple later that night and commented on the weight of the wife etc. - no one is safe Malcolm Gladwell (popular author of Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers and other books) – mentioned he left only 10% tip Goal is to shame them into changing their behaviour
Share the story of this girl from Seol South Korea Dog on subway went to the washroom - onlookers gave her kleenex – she wiped the dog but did not clean up the floor - an elderly lady gave her a red rag which she discarded Someone took her photo and it became Viral on the Internet Viral means – spreads quickly and often viewed by millions of people She ended up dropping out of university because of all of the torment, phone calls, and emails
Ask how many people heard of the story in England of the Cat Bin Lady?
Show the video and then ask them to discuss what they think should be done to this lady… and who should do it
Mention the outcome to date
Show the alternate ending that has been posted along with many other suggestions that… would not reflect our Catholic views or forgiveness!

Not over yet – an Internet game online is available
Explain what Chat Roulette and how it works – where are we heading
Lots of weird things and some fun things but need to way the risks
What age should we allow this freedom Where is the supervision This can take place anywhere – mobile devices, friends house, etc. What is the role of education
Disturbing images
What do we do Do we hide our heads in the sand and lock everyone away from the Internet Some say yes, but I say this is not reasonable or practical We need to do what we do best, Educate others Some recommended sites
Mention that links will bring them to the sites
Think of the Internet like a door that is not locked Would you check it out first before allowing young children in When would you allow older children to check behind the door – once they have the skills to handle the unexpected and make safe decisions
Questions we need to be asking as educators
2 minute discussion
Give examples of alignment with our Catholic curriculum – religious education and family life education Grades 3-8

How do I stay current and create a professional learning network One way is to use the web 2.0 tools such as Twitter Explain use Mention daily newspaper summary of postings from others TDOttawa
Ask how many watched the Chile Miners being rescued Now ask how many are holding their breath for the textbook to come out?
Mention worldwide newspapers available on the Internet and on mobile devices like iPods Mention free apps or 99c apps on iPods for radio stations

The Kaiser foundation study looked at over 2000 youth between ages 8 and 18. This is the third wave of studies, the first in 1999, then 2004, and then in 2009.
Double jeopardy time – double or nothing with your colleague from the earlier trivia challenge
This increased from 6 hours and 19 minutes in 1999 and 6 hours and 21 minutes in 2004 When you consider multitasking, ie. Listening to music while working on the computer, youth spent an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes worth of media content each day
I am surprised this is not higher but since it started at 8 year olds we would likely find higher percentages of 13 to 18 year olds
There is a new way of watching TV 48% watch online, 30% on a cell phone ipod or mp3 player Split 60/40 between watching tv content on a tv and other devices
Texting has clearly replaced email
Even across demographic groups there is little difference in overall access – many as high as 98% access - Need to provide for the small percentage that don’t have access
Total time spent reading hard copies of books, magazines, and newspapers for pleasure decreased by about 5 minutes a day from 43 minutes daily in 1999 and 2004 to 38 minutes in 2009.
Examples of staying current with changes in technology – mashable daily RSS feeds or daily email summaries
