What’s happening online? … in Coventry, England…Mary Bale, 45, found herself caught in the crosshairs of the reputation executor that is the web this week after a surveillance video of her placing a cat in a garbage bin went viral. Now, the Internet is replete with parodies, groups and spin-offs dedicated to bringing Bale down. According to The New York Times , Lola the cat was discovered unhappily yowling in a garbage bin outside the home of owners Stephanie and Daryll Mann. In hopes of discovering who had trashed kitty, the couple looked at security footage of the area, which showed an unidentified middle-aged woman petting the cat, and then dropping it in the trash. The couple posted the vid online, naturally, in an attempt to find out who the woman was. Subsequently, Bale received death threats , and information like her address and her boss’s phone number were spread around the web. Although Bale was placed under police protection (due to the aforementioned death threats) she did issue an apology yesterday after Facebook was forced to take down a group titled “Death to Mary Bale.”

110. Mashable – Staying Current The latest numbers from eMarketer project that advertisers will spend nearly $1.7 billion in the U.S. on social networking sites in 2010. Worldwide, spending will hit $3.3 billion according to the report. The numbers represent a significant bump up from estimates published by the research firm at the end of last year, when it projected $1.3 billion would be spent on the space in the U.S. Not surprisingly, eMarketer sees about half of that money (in the U.S.) going to Facebook, with MySpace continuing to see a smaller share of the pie. Separately, the firm estimated that Facebook’s 2010 revenue would hit $1.2 billion in a report published last week. Earlier this month, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said that some of the social network’s biggest advertisers had boosted ad spending by 10x this year; a trend that’s apparent in the eMarketer report.

Mashable – Staying Current This past weekend, Calvin Klein Jeans replaced three of its billboards — two in downtown New York and one on Sunset Boulevard in LA — not with another racy montage of scantily clad models, but with a bright red QR code under the words “Get It Uncensored.” Passersby can use their smartphones to snap a picture, which will pull up an exclusive, 40-second commercial featuring models Lara Stone, “A.J.,” Sid Ellisdon, Grayson Vaughan and Eric Anderson. After the spot plays, viewers can then share the code with their Facebook and Twitter networks. QR codes are increasingly appearing in advertisements as a way to increase engagement with consumers. Although already common in Japan (where they were originally invented), they do not appear in many advertisements — much less take up an entire billboard.

Mashable – Staying Current When news of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s death was revealed on Tuesday morning, it was too late for Sports Illustrated to change the cover photo of its print edition, featuring basketball star Lebron James and two of his new teammates. It was not, however, too late to alter the cover of the iPad edition of this week’s issue. The cover was accompanied by an article by Tom Verducci, which iPad readers can access alongside the original LeBron cover story. Verducci’s piece will be made freely available on SI.com later this week so that print subscribers and purchasers — as well as anyone else who wants to read the story, for that matter — can read it before the next issue. The cover change has interesting implications for the future of publishing on the iPad.

Mashable – Staying Current Apple has just posted its Q3 earnings for fiscal year 2010 and the company has once again bested its own records, this time reporting an astounding $15.7 billion in revenue and a net quarterly profit of $3.35 billion. Apple sold 3.47 million Macs in the quarter, which is a new quarterly record for the company, and 8.4 million iPhones. iPhone sales were up 61% year-over-year. Apple’s newest product, the iPad , sold 3.27 million units. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in the company’s statement, “It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4.” The quarter ended on June 26, 2010, just two days after the iPhone 4 was released, which makes the sales figure all the more impressive. This quarter — perhaps more than any other — Apple has faced big competition in the U.S. from the likes of the Google-backed Android platform.

114. Mashable – Staying Current Ford Motor Company is breaking with tradition in a big way. The company has been leaving digital breadcrumbs on the Ford Explorer Facebook Page, and in just a few days they’ll take to the web — instead of an auto show — for an all-day Facebook event to unveil the redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer. On July 26, Ford, along with Mike Rowe of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs series, will use Facebook to reveal the 2011 Ford Explorer. The online event will coincide with a big offline reveal in several cities across the nation, but this marks the first time a major car company will forgo the auto show for a web unveiling. Scott Monty, Ford’s head of social media, tells us that this is a very “comprehensive online play” that extends beyond just Facebook and involves several other web-centric elements that the company cannot reveal just yet. Monty speaks enthusiastically when he says that, “This is a really really different Explorer, and we wanted to reveal it in a really really different way.”

Mashable – Staying Current Harvard research director Carrie James took the stage at Mashable’s Social Good Summit earlier today to encourage us all to mentor young people on using social media for social good. The online behaviors of youth and how to improve and correct them are part of how James feels new media can be used to address the world’s challenges. To further this mission, James has activity been working with Harvard colleagues on the GoodPlay Project, a study on the ethical sensibilities of digital youth. The study explores youth identity, privacy, ownership, authority, credibility and participation. In their research, the team has found that most young people are devoid of ethical thinking or consideration for others when using the web. It’s a sobering reality that James hopes to change. James believes this is an untapped opportunity and suggests a number of actionable steps that we can take to change the way young people approach and use social technologies.

Mashable – Staying Current Apple’s Steve Jobs has taken the stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco to make a slew of announcements related to iOS, Apple TV, iTunes and the iPod. First though, he dropped some big stats on the state of the iOS ecosystem. According to Jobs, Apple has sold more than 120 million iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. This is up from 100 million devices just three months ago. What may be more impressive is that Apple is activating 230,000 new iOS device every single day . That’s more than the number that Google touted in May of 100,000 Android device activations daily (though that number has likely grown significantly higher since then). Unsurprisingly, the App Store is also on fire. Jobs announced that 6.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store, and the pace of downloads is now at 200 apps per second. 25,000 of the applications in the app store are now iPad apps. Apple’s retail stores are also growing. There are now 300 Apple stores in the world, including new ones in Shanghai and Paris. Apple Growth

118. Mashable – Staying Current Mark Zuckerberg is donating $100 million to the Newark public school system. The donation will be the first part of a foundation intended improve U.S. education. Zuckerberg will announce the contribution Friday on The Oprah Winfrey Show , where he will be joined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Some will call the donation calculated. The timing of the announcement is in sync with the October 1 release of The Social Network , based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires , neither of which protrays Zuckerberg in the most favorable manner. The donation could also be aimed at counteracting any negative stigma that could arise from his new rank on the Forbes 400. The fact of the matter is that Mark Zuckerberg just donated $100 million of his own personal wealth to one of the country’s worst school systems.

Mashable – Staying Current Location-based networking service Loopt has just updated its iPhone app to add deep integration with Facebook Places , making it easy to see all of your friends status updates and checkins, whether they use Loopt or not. Lots of services — like Foursquare and SCVNGR — have already implemented Facebook Places support into their apps. What we appreciate about Loopt’s approach is that other than a Facebook watermark over a user’s name and the color of the map point, the experience for using Loopt is basically the same whether you are connecting only with other Loopt members or linking it to Facebook Places.

The use of these devices has included applications of Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google research types of maps. The class has completed assignments that involve use of Google Earth to learn about latitude and longitude, map types and geographic features of parts of Canada. Each student was able to view numerous sites that highlight maps and graphs about weather and climate data. None of this would have been possible using overbooked computer labs and text based/wall map resources”. “ I have used Smart phones to allow instant research in the classroom... If the information is not crucial that they memorize but is background information on a text, it can be quite powerful. For example, we are currently looking at Animal Farm, and I needed to provide some context regarding the Russian Revolution. Some of the students were not getting it, so in 2-3 minutes they had looked up relevant information on the topic (example: Leon Trotsky) and were able to give some background immediately “ Lots of students use their cell phones and iPods as agendas” “ In our Math classes many students use them for doing mathematical problems, no longer any excuse that they don't have calculators in their classroom” “ I have used IPODs with a splitter in the classroom, so that students can listen to a lesson, a movie, etc. together”
