11. The European vision
• Safe: safety at low altitude levels will be just as good as for traditional manned aviation. The
concept is to develop a system similar to that of Air Traffic Management for manned aviation.
• Automated: the system will provide information for highly automated or autonomous drones
to fly safely and avoid obstacles or collisions.
• Up and running by 2019: for the basic services like registration, e-identification and geo-
fencing. However, further U-Space services and their corresponding standards will need to be
developed in the future.
• U-space will be established with U1 by 2019
• SESAR demonstrations of the initial U-space
services and first results from SESAR research
and development projects, will pave the way for
the roll-out of U-space (U2-U4).
12. The European vision
• U1 - e-registration, e-identification and geofencing.
• U2 - management of drone operations, flight planning, flight approval, tracking, dynamic
airspace information, and procedural interfaces with air traffic control.
• U3 - complex operations in dense areas, capacity management, assistance for conflict
detection. automated DAA functionalities and reliable communication.
• U4 - integrated interfaces with manned aviation, full operational capability of U-space,high
level of automation, connectivity and digitalisation for both the drone and the U-space system.
