  4. 4. Smart Learning Environments in Global Context New smart devices and software enable this collaboration by providing: •an engaging personalized learning experience •rich digital content that encourages students to participate •collaboration between teachers to share and create better teaching material The Next Generation Classroom Rapid advances in the technology industry are bringing new opportunities for schools and teachers to find innovative tools to enable the next-generation classroom. Today’s tech-savvy K-12 pupils have grown up with electronic devices. They’ are “digital natives”. Solutions • providing an interactive learning environment where students actively participate in the lesson, interactive management tool for leading class lessons and managing educational resources, including apps. • Interactive White Board • tablets enable students to access and share educational content virtually anywhere, anytime. • Chromebooks • Smart-School Mobile Print
  5. 5. Smart Learning Environments in Global Context Smart Learning Environments - a context-aware ubiquitous learning perspective •Gwo-Jen Hwang the learning system is able to detect the real-world status of learners using sensing technologies, interact with them via wireless networks, present learning guidance and offer supplementary materials or feedback to them via mobile devices. During the learning process, the learners’ real-world learning status as well as the interactions between learners and the system can be recorded for further analysis. Various studies have demonstrated the benefits of context-aware ubiquitous learning in terms of helping students deal with problems as well as acquiring knowledge in the real world
  6. 6. Smart Learning Environments in Global Context A smart learning environment is context- aware; that is, the learner’s situation or the contexts of the real-world environment in which the learner is located are sensed, implying that the system is able to provide learning support based on the learner’s online and real- world status. A smart learning environment is able to offer instant and adaptive support to learners by immediate analyses of the needs of individual learners from different perspectives (e.g., learning performance, learning behaviors, profiles, personal factors) as well as the online and real-world contexts in which they are situated. Moreover, it can actively provide various personalized support to the learners, including learning guidance, feedback, hints and learning tools, based on their needs. A smart learning environment is able to adapt the user interface (i.e., the ways of presenting information) and the subject contents to meet the personal factors (e.g., learning styles and preferences) and learning status (e.g., learning performance) of individual learners. The user interface is not necessarily a conventional computer. Instead, learners can interact with the learning environment via mobile devices (e.g., smartphones or tablet computers), wearable devices (e.g., Google Glass or a digital wristwatch), or even ubiquitous computing systems embedded in everyday objects. Therefore, it is a challenging issue to adapt the user interface to meet the learners’ needs in a smart learning environment.
  7. 7. Smart Learning Environments in Global Context Russian Educators Transforming Classroom Practices Through ICT-Rich School Environments Research suggests that the integration of ICT into teaching moves in phases from the enrichment of existing practices towards more innovative teaching practices. Our research focuses on the experience of two Russian schools that are using the laptops daily to explore how these educators are enriching and transforming Russian educational practices. The impacts of these tools can be seen in classroom practice, student engagement, peer collaboration, assessment, and communication with parents, which in turn, has shifted the dynamic between teachers and students and helped foster a more personalized and humanistic learning environment. 8. 8. Smart Learning Environments in Global Context Inclusive Education in Rural Alberta, Canada: Utilizing ICT to Support Twenty- First Century Learning ICT in a K-12 context represents the possibility for change in the public education system in Alberta, from traditional pedagogies of exclusion to one which embraces inclusive practice for all students. The implication of such fundamental change has equal significance for teacher practice. The use of ICT has the potential to transform traditional education into multidimensional learning environments that support traditional, mobile, and blended learning environments • Constructivist learning environment • Collaborative learning • Community of learners • Blended learning environment Dermod Craig Madden
