BUSINESS
Good morning BNI and the happiest of new years to everyone! Traditionally each new year brings renewed awareness and a fresh perspective. So to honor that tradition, today I’m going to talk about the health and wellness of one your most important business assets : YOUR WEBSITE.
I bet a lot of you are thinking: my site seems fine! It’s on the internet, it’s visible…what more could I really ask for?
It isn’t always obvious that your site needs help. I’d like to point out some of the tell-tale signs of a structurally unsound website.
Is your site an HTML/CSS site? If you don’t know, ask your designer. If the answer is yes, this means your site is likely to look terrible on a mobile device. Which, these days, is a pretty big problem.
Another sign is if your site hasn’t been touched in over 6 months. This means that its likely out of date and vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Yet another sign is if it loads very slow. here’s a quick tip: 47% of online consumers expect a page to load in 3 seconds or less.
another example is if you have missing images
or you have broken links
a neglected website is likely to suffer from some of the following ailments:
increased page load time
lowered security
a frustrating user experience
declining search engine rankings
Hacking vulnerability
As it turns out, creating a website and maintaining a website are 2 very different things
I'm here to tell you that Web maintenance is essential to keeping your website online, functioning properly and generating consistent traffic.
So, you just spent a whole wad of cash on a new website. Now I'm telling you that you need to spend MORE money on your web stuff?
Here’s the deal: you wouldn’t run out and buy a new house and expect everything to work properly for the next 50 years would you?
How about a car? are you going to buy a new car and never change the oil, tires, and neglect to take it in for a tune-up?
Which is more expensive in the long run: ongoing preventative maintenance or buying a new car or home each time there is a major problem?
It’s important to remember that all web platforms are essentially tools
All tools require maintenance
Regular maintenance allows these tools to function at their peak capacity
So I would like to suggest thinking about your website as a part-time employee
You can’t just leave an employee to their own devices right? You want to make sure that your money is well spent, that they’re doing what they are supposed to do.
The same concept applies to your site. You need to check in on it once in a while, and make sure that it’s not just eating jelly donuts and checking Facebook all day long. If you don’t have the time for this task, then hire a manager. Or in this case, hire a web designer to do it for you.
For those of you wanting to care for you site on the regular, I am including a boilerplate check list here. This list pertains largely to WordPress users since that is within my web builder wheel house:
So here’s the list:
Install the latest version of WordPress whenever you can
Update all plugins
Monitor your uptime (total amount of time that your website has been functional)
Schedule regular database back-ups
Check for security fixes and alerts
Run Performance optimization
Now, I’d like to go into detail on a few items that I think are crucial to web care and wellness.
[The term "uptime" is used to determine the time a computer system has been functional. In network terms it is defined by the availability of a server, device or site. In individual computer terms it is defined by the reliability and stability of the individual system]
Regular backups are the cornerstone of proper website maintenance. In case something goes horribly wrong with your site, having a recent backup can save considerable amounts of time and money. For any site with regular web traffic, backing up your site daily is essential. These backups will eliminate the risk of losing the latest content should the worst come to pass.
The best solution to implement is this: find a good hosting provider or web service that does this for you.
Another solution is to put this into motion yourself. My recommendations would be to:
- back up your site not once, but twice. Once on your local drive and once in the cloud. You can do this for free and automate it with GoogleDrive or Dropbox
Another website must is to scan for malware and signs of hacking regularly. Malware, for those of you who don’t know, is essentially software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.
So for many of us, when we think of hacking, we think of going to a site and suddenly getting attacked by pop-ups or seeing a barrage of porno. (Assuming that you aren’t doing a search for porn in the first place). This is called defacing a website and it is the most obvious indication that you’ve been hacked.
However, many hackers are much sneakier than that. Many will hide files within your site, parasitic in nature, which will slowly damage your site from the inside out. They can discreetly implement malware or other malicious scripts on your site. These scripts will sometimes:
Phish for usernames, passwords, email addresses and other important information
They can force your visitors to download malicious Malware
They can redirect your clients to a dangerous site
So how do you prevent this from happening? When you use WordPress, you can install a mini application called a plugin to your site. If you would like a security plugin recommendation, please talk to me after the meeting!
When it comes to load time, it’s important to assume the worst: all of your visitors are impatient and are likely to be annoyed if your site takes more than a handful of seconds to load. I’m not going to harp on this too much, but if you’re curious about how your site measures up, head to www.tools.pingdom.com and run a quick test. AlchemyThree for instance received a B+ so I have a little work to do myself.
I’d like to mention WordPress briefly since this is my web platform of choice.
Wordpress is a powerful Content Management System which essentially allows everyday folks—who don’t have any coding experience—to log into their site and upload photos, add content and manage blog posts.
WordPress is an open source project which means that there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. As a result of this free and fluid approach, WordPress is known for it’s robust support and it’s active, loyal community.
Some of the biggest sites built on WordPress include: The New Yorker, BBC America, Sony Music, MTV News and Beyonce
So here you have our official AlchemyThree Web Care packages. Each of these options include software updates, uptime/security monitoring, performance optimization, backups (either monthly or daily), detailed monthly reports and dedicated support time ranging from 30 to 120 minutes per month.
