17. Submissions to the Editor
Each journal differs in
terms of submissions,
length of paper and
format.
Make sure you read the
Instructions for Authors
carefully before drafting
your manuscript.
If your journal does not
have a “Submit online”
tab, it means that you
will be submitting
directly to the editor,
either in electronic or
hardcopy format, or
both.
18. General tips
• S1M might ask that you remove all images/graphs/tables from your
manuscripts and submit them in a separate document
o If this applies to you, make sure you LABEL everything correctly, and
show in your manuscript where the figure/graph/table would go in
brackets
o For example: [INSERT FIGURE 1 HERE]
o Make sure the numbering in your manuscript matches the numbering
in the accompanying document
• Anonymity for peer review
o You might be asked to submit an additional manuscript with all
references to your own work removed
o Continue to show references but remove all mention of your name
o For example: Sharks are at risk of extinction (Withheld, 2001:3)
o Do the same for your bibliography list
o Remember to keep your original manuscript intact!
• Turnaround times
o Once you have heard back from the editor, complete your corrections
and resubmit your revised paper as soon as possible to ensure that
your work is considered for earliest publication

25. Predatory Journals and Open Access
• Check the journal website – does it look legit?
• Does the journal have a listed Editor(s) and Editorial Board?
o Are they real people?
o Is the journal listed on their personal websites?
• Is the journal affiliated with an institution or
society/association?
• Who is the journal accredited by?
• Are there high Article Page Charges (APCs)?
• Is the publisher of the journal listed on Beall’s* list?
*Beall’s list is considered by many as being controversial. It should act as a guide, not as fact.
