But even these deterrents weren’t enough to discourage the droves of
shoppers who crowded into the Eastwood Mall Complex in Niles to
experience the best sales of the year.
Patty Fonce, 49, of Girard, said, “I look forward to this every year. It’s a
tradition … and I’ve been known to wait in long lines in order to make
sure I get a great deal.”
“One year — before the mall started opening on Thanksgiving — I slept
overnight in the concourse because Old Navy was giving away Kinects
for Xbox One,” Fonce said.
Fonce said the most coveted item she purchased this year was a $149 50
inch television from Best Buy.
“I finished 95 percent of my holiday shopping before 10 a.m.,” Fonce said.
Fonce was among the crowd that gathered outside Dillard’s for the 8 a.m.
balloon drop with thousands of dollars in gift cards up for grabs.
“The only fight I witnessed this year was between two gents during the
balloon drop. But it was just a verbal argument,” Fonce said.
Jessica Conlin, 30, of Niles, started her holiday shopping at 5 a.m.
“I usually go out every year on Black Friday,” she said.
Conlin said the crowd in some places seemed to be relatively tame,
compared with previous years. “But there were some irritated people at
Macy’s when we had to wait in line for 20 minutes,” Conlin said.
Nevertheless, Conlin was satisfied with her purchases. Sometimes, she
said, she shops for herself. “Some deals, you just can’t pass up,” Conlin
said.
Mike Bilko, 62, of Liberty, was another early morning shopper who was
out at Target in the Eastwood Mall Complex. Bilko said he made a deal
with his wife, Rita.
