6. Food Tech Report, July 20166
Sector Overview
Recent Notable Activities
• A total of $6.8 Billion was invested in Global Food Tech in 2015, with an increase in larger and later stage deals.
• Majority of investment and acquisition activities were driven by China, Germany, India and the United Kingdom.
• Chinese companies are raising benchmarks set by their American counterparts in terms of market maturity. Examples:
Merger of China’s competing firms Meituan and Dianping is valued at $18B while Ele.me raised a total funding of $2.34B.
• M&A activities were strong in 2015 with 60 deals and the trend should continue into 2016 . Potential companies for
acquisition are ones that have gained considerable scale.
• The overall Food On-Demand market is nearing a mature stage and the incumbents are looking forward to increase their
strategic stake in the ecosystem (Rocket Internet’s Hello Food, is nearing Yelp, Zomato, GrubHub etc.).
• Online Grocery Retailers have continued to scale. Established online players like Instacart are expanding into new markets,
while traditional grocers like Kroger and Walmart are adopting to online ordering and delivery services. E-commerce giants
such as Amazon are testing waters in the same segment. (Amazon recently started grocery delivery services in the UK, first
such outside the US).
• Also in the fray are Meal-Kit Delivery services (or fresh-food subscriptions) that are collectively estimated to raise $1.5B in
sales in 2016, despite not being profitable yet.
• Food Substitutes market which include companies making plant-based protein substitutes, is receiving significant interest
from investors (Impossible Foods closed a $108M round in Dec, 2015). Notably, the big funded players still do not have their
products in the market.
• Significant early stage investment activities have been observed as well in IOT - enabled kitchen appliances market. Juciero,
June and Tovala closed multiple rounds of funding. A similar investment is expected to continue in 2016-17.
