  2. 2. In the past we have consumed media in analogue forms but we are now in the era of Digitisation. Digitisation is the process of converting analogue objects into digital format. Analogue Digital Digitisation
  3. 3. Media convergence is the coming together of different technologies as a result of digitisation. In Henry Jenkins’ view, it gives us the opportunity to develop new skills, new ways of transmitting information, new creative genres and new modes to deliver education to students. He argued that it “is more than simply a technological shift”. Convergence allows one media product to perform many different tasks. Media Convergence
  4. 4. The internet technology and its Web 2.0 platforms together with digitisation and convergence have given us the opportunity to participate, consume and produce media in the virtual world. It transforms the relationship between industries, market and audiences. Flickr Web 2.0 platforms
  5. 5. Through transformation and convergence audiences are no longer passive consumers but also active producers. Out of all these emerge a culture of participatory. We upload photographs onto Flickr or Instagram (photo sharing sites). We download music, movies, artwork, text, cliparts and images to remix and mashup. We then upload our newly created piece of work onto social media website such as SlideShare, Vimeo, or YouTube. How many of us are familiar or even aware of copyright and individual properties law?   6. 6. Downloading and copying other people's work are illegal activities unless permission is sought and given by the owner. Individual’s work is protected by copyright law which protects the right to the ownership and economic right driven from the work of the creator. Infringement on copyright law can get you into a great deal of trouble. If you check before you download. This need not be the case! It can cost you money. Some works are free for the general public to use. Look for material that gives you the right to use. Copyright Law
  7. 7. Copyright law is restrictive but necessary for the protection of the artist’s income. However, it need not stop us from producing creative work to share in the digitisation and convergence era. Legally usable and sharable materials are available on sites such as: Flickr For example my work here gives permission to re-use, share and build upon.   8. 8. Knowing where to look for and check the license permission is very important to avoid copyright infringement. Creative Commons’ web site has information on types of licenses under which the owner of the work has waved certain rights to their works.
