 Subsidies for inhabitants to introduce
     small-scale renewable energy systems
 Introducing minimum quota for the
housing areas within the city walls

3. Introduction of renewable energy sources
     should strongly involve housing

CLIMATE CHANGE – major challenge of 21st century
Forcing mechanisms:
Natural: variations in solar radiation, variations in the Earth’s orbit, mountains
formation and volcanic activity, continental drift, clouds
Anthropogenic: changes in the greenhouse gas concentrations.

Most concerning factors leading to the increase in CO2 levels:
• emissions from fossil fuel combustion
• aerosols (PM in the atmosphere)
• cement manufacture
• land use
• ozone depletion
• animal agriculture
• deforestation

The threats of CLIMATE CHANGE in Croatia
Croatia has shown a trend of decreasing precipitation and increasing
temperatures during most seasons. It is expected to get hotter and drier,
especially in summer. If emissions continue to increase, between years
2040-2070 it will get warmer from 3 to 3.5° C.

Potential areas affected by climate change in Dubrovnik:
• Tourism
• Coastal zone and sea-level rise
• Fisheries and marine culture
• Water resources
• Agriculture
• Impacts on Health

GOAL and OBJECTIVES

GOAL
Establish Dubrovnik as a leading example for sustainable energy management of a
UNESCO cultural heritage site.

OBJECTIVES

 Driving behavior change for better energy use
 Generate savings from optimising energy performance of the existing systems
 Generating income from introduction of a sustainable energy managment system

                                     Final Conclusions
Local Community:
• they are the beneficiaries
• their involvement from the start is fundamental
• they can help to shape their own future
Heritage Management:
• Authorities must be ready and willing to implement the Management Plan
• There must be a legal framework to enforce sustainable use of energy within the site
Climate Change:
• Understanding the current situation is vital
• We can make the site an example of sustainability for other heritage sites
Economics:
• Funds are available and the ongoing financial benefits are clear
• Wider economic benefits such as the creation of new green jobs
