Definition :-
• Toothache or tooth pain is caused when the nerve to a tooth is
irritated. Dental infection, gum disease, plaque, dental decay, injury, or loss of
a tooth (including tooth extractions) are the most common causes of dental
pain.
What symptoms accompany a toothache?
If you notice pus near the source of the pain, your tooth may have become
abscessed, causing the surrounding bone to become infected. Or the pus could
indicate gum disease, which is usually characterized by inflammation of the soft
tissue, bleeding gums and abnormal loss of bone surrounding the teeth.
• Fever
• Swelling around the tooth area
• Pain when you bite
• A foul-tasting discharge
• Continuous lasting pain
7. Prevention :-
• Brush at least twice a day, preferably
after meals and snacks.
• Floss at least once a day to prevent gum
disease.
• Visit your dentist regularly for oral
examinations and a professional cleaning
twice a year.

hypersensitivity or root sensitivity. If hot, cold, sweet or
very acidic foods and drinks, or breathing in cold air,
makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive or painful then
you have sensitive teeth.
WHY ?
Tooth sensitivity is usually caused by dentin on root
areas exposed due to receded gums or periodontal
disease. Receded gums are very common and up

19. 8) Discoloured or yellow teeth
Types of Discoloration :-
•Extrinsic discoloration occurs in the outer layer of the tooth, called the
enamel; enamel stains can range from white streaks to yellow tints or brown
spots and pits.
•Intrinsic discoloration occurs in the inner structure of the tooth, called the
dentin, when the dentin darkens or displays a yellow (or gray) tint.
20. Reasons of Tooth Discoloration :-
• Foods/Drinks: Coffee, tea, colas, wines and certain foods (e.g., potatoes, cherries,
blueberries) can cause extrinsic tooth stains.
• Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco can result in discoloured teeth.
• Poor Dental Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing to remove plaque and
stain-producing substances can cause tooth stains.
• Disease: Diseases affecting enamel and dentin can lead to tooth discoloration.
Certain infections in pregnant mothers can cause tooth discoloration in the baby by
affecting enamel development.
• Ageing: As you age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth wears away, revealing
the dentin's natural, yellow colour. Additionally, over the years your teeth
accumulate more stains and tartars, causing them to darken and discolour.
• Genetics: Some lucky individuals have naturally brighter and/or thicker enamel
than others.
21. Treatment :-
•Bleaching
•Scaling
• Environment: Excessive fluoride from environmental sources, such as high fluoride
levels in drinking water, or from excessive use of fluoride applications, rinses,
toothpastes and oral fluoride supplements, can cause teeth discoloration.
