UX STRAT Europe, Francesco Cara: "Strategies to Harness the Internet of Things for Sustainability"
1. Strategies to harness
IoT and the web for
sustainability
Francesco Cara @frakara
UX STRAT Europe, Amsterdam June 5th, 2015
2. We believe the next opportunity is what we call the
“cleanweb”:
a form of clean tech that takes advantage of the
internet, social media and mobile communications
to alter how we consume resources, relate to the
world, interact with each other, and pursue
economic growth.
3. The world’s current ecological, demographic, and
economic trajectory is unsustainable, meaning that if we
continue with “business as usual” we will hit social and
ecological crises with calamitous results.
Jeffrey Sachs, Common Wealth, 2008, p. 7
Nasa, Blue Marbel 2012
4. In 2050
More than 9.2 billion people
Global average surface temperature +0.5/1.5°C

United Nations , p. 5
5. The Parties included in Annex I
shall, individually or jointly, ensure
that their aggregate anthropogenic
carbon dioxide equivalent
emissions of the greenhouse gases
listed in Annex A do not exceed
their assigned amounts with a view
to reducing their overall emissions
of such gases by at least 5 per cent
below 1990 levels in the
commitment period 2008 to 2012
(art. 3.1).
The ultimate objective of this
Convention is to achieve
stabilization of greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere
at a level that would prevent
dangerous anthropogenic
interference with the climate
system (art. 2 Objective).

on Climate Change, signed 1992
Kyoto Protocol
drawn 1997, ratified 2005
…..deep cuts in global greenhouse
gas emissions are required
according to science with a view to
reducing global greenhouse gas
emissions so as to hold the increase
in global average temperature
below 2°C above
preindustrial levels
(decision 1/CP.16 I.4).
