  1. An increasingly globalmarketplace is rapidly driving new worldwide standards for worker skills. Education philosophy and methods are undergoing a transformation in order to help students develop 21st century skills and remain competitive. In many places, population growth, resource limitations, and social/cultural barriers to technology hinder student learning from being in step with the needs of the 21st century economy. In addition, a growing number of new generation students are visual learners and digital natives, but classrooms are often not able to provide access to learning through new mediums, leading to disengagement and high dropout rates. A widening generation gap between students and teachers further creates a perceived technology learning curve for educators, and remains a barrier to integrating digital tools in the classroom. Student load and funding constrains often limit teachers from enhancing their technical skills and introducing technology into their curriculum.
  2. Autodesk offers real-worldtechnology for the classroom that supports creativity, is easy to use, and helps students recognize what they can accomplish while laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of design. Autodesk software, learning content, certifications, free apps, and support foster creativity and critical thinking in teachers and students.

Digital Tools can help address the challenges of improving student achievement, and in developing students with the skills for the 21st century workplace, in a number of ways.Studies demonstrate that integratingtechnology into curriculum can be beneficial to student learning. A truly integrated technology program provides countless benefits to students and staff.:Intrinsically motivating :Technology is intrinsically interesting to this generation of learners, serving to engage students who may not be otherwise academically motivated. Appealing to a generation of visual learners: By incorporating technology and aligning it with the curriculum, educators may be able to help the school system change to support visual information and "learning-through-doing" approaches.Improved test scores, grades and overall student learning:Recent studies have demonstrated that technology can have a positive impact on test scores.  In an eight-year longitudinal study of SAT I performance at a New Hampshire school, researchers found significant student achievement gains in test scores after computer technology was put into use and integrated with standards (Bain & Ross, 2000). In a recent separate study of students in Florida, it was demonstrated that access to a solid technology coursework is related to better attendance and higher grade point averages. (Grunwald, 2009)Beneficial to students with special needs: Technology not only gives students with special needs more confidence, but it allows them customized opportunities to overcome their unique challenges.

In addition, digital tools in the classroom can help support the development of 21st century skills – critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, project based learning, and real world industry applicability.Increased Knowledge and Opportunities: Access to 3D models and gaming technology allow students to extend learning.These digital experiences can lead to increased knowledge within content areas and increase student engagement.Impact on creativity, problem-solving skills and self-image: When used correctly, technology canlead to improvements in students’ inventive thinking skills, including creativity, and enables them to express themselves in new and innovative ways. Additionally, it allows communication with individuals and organizations throughout the world, further inspiring creative thought and learning.  The customizable and fluid nature of digital content and tools can also challenge students to develop more effective problem solving, higher order and sound reasoning skills esteem.Labor-market value skills: To keep competitive in a global market, students must learn 21st century thinking skills such as creativity, collaboration and flexibility. By incorporating meaningful technology use into a curriculum, educators ensure that students will begin to learn these critical skills.   Let’s take a look at how Autodesk solutions can bring digital tools to a classroom environment.

Specifically for teachers, our ISTE Seal of Alignment-winning Digital STEAM Workshop is a great resource for interactive project based learning. Certification testing is offered to help students and teachers assess their new skills. Outside the classroom Autodesk offers an array of easy to download applications and project ideas, and partners with leading education organizations to engage students in ongoing learning through friendly competitions like design and robotics.   8. The Digital STEAM workshop is a highly visual web-based learning content portal that offers a new approach to teaching design, sustainability, and creative problem solving. The curriculum focuses on developing essential 21st century skills - critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and problem solving. The Digital STEAM Workshop was awarded the ISTE (International Society for Technology Education) Seal of Alignment for Proficiency . After rigorous review of the curriculum , ISTE determined the Digital STEAM Workshop supports their Student NETS ( National Education Technology Standards) so teachers can feel confident in the quality of this curriculum meeting these standards. Digital STEAM: Teaches Autodesk software through the design processEngages students in STEAM through projects developed by industry experts and teachers. Projects include a 3D real-time project viewer, datasets and step by step technical videosIncludes comprehensive teacher resources including lesson plans, project briefs, design criteria worksheets, assessment tools, and rubrics.You can access the portal at www.Autodesk.com/digitalsteam. Projects vary in difficulty and in time and come complete with comprehensive lesson plans that provide teachers with learning objectives, day to day plan, connections to science, technology, engineering, art and math concepts as well as rubrics, tests and standards mapping.
