What is open science?
• Foster (fosteropenscience.eu)
“Open science is about extending the principles of openness to the whole research cycle,
fostering sharing and collaboration as early as possible thus entailing a systematic change to
the way science and research is done”
• Open access publications (already mandated)
• Data sharing
• Code sharing
• Stimuli sharing
• Pre-registration (and registered reports)
• Preprints
Why should we care?
• It’s good for science
• Everyone can read your papers
• Other researchers can re-use your data
• Experimental design and statistical approach more open – decreases risk of p-hacking etc.
• And many other reasons…
• It’s (increasingly) good for your CV
• Some researchers include experience in OS practices as a desirable/essential on job applications
• Some grant/fellowship applications require commitment to OS, and I have seen examples of reviewers
including OS as a reason for scoring the application highly
• It’s important for the REF
Why should we care?
• It’s important for the REF
Environment
“The revised template will also include a section on ‘open research’, detailing the submitting unit’s
open access strategy, including where this goes above and beyond the REF open access policy
requirements, and wider activity to encourage the effective sharing and management of research
data. The panels will set out further guidance on this in the panel criteria.”
Individual submissions
“The sub-panels welcome research practice that supports reproducible science and the application
of best practice in relation to use of animals in research. Examples include registered reports, pre-
registration, publication of datasets, experimental materials, analytic code, and use of reporting
checklists for publication purposes. These contribute to the evaluation of rigour for submitted
outputs. Replication studies may be submitted as outputs and will be evaluated on the extent to
which they contribute significant new knowledge, improved methods, or advance theory or
practice.”
Open Science in Psychology
• Timeline:
• October 2017 – Departmental survey on OS practices
• January 2018 – Created the “Open Science Interest Group”
• June 2018 – Held first meeting of OSIG
• Discussed what open science is, and how we promote it in the department
• July 2018 – connected OSIG to wider UK-OSWG
• October 2018 – Held second meeting of OSIG
• Discussed results of departmental survey, and where to focus attention on increasing uptake
• October 2018 – Created webpage on official departmental website
(https://www.york.ac.uk/psychology/research/groups/open-science/)
• October 2018 – proposed funding mechanism to DRC for promoting OS
Open Science in Psychology
• The future
• First “Open Science Seminar”
• Tuesday week 2 summer term
• Candice Morey, Cardiff University
• Open to all university members
• ERC workshop to introduce OS to wider department
• If above successful, re-run for faculty members
• Strengthen links to intra-institution groups (eg. EROS)
• Strengthen links to inter-institutional groups (eg. UK-OSWG)
What I’ve done
• Sharing data
• Sharing code
• Preprints
• Registered Report (ongoing…)

ODiP: Psychology Open Science Interest Group

  • 1. Psychology Open Science Interest Group Aidan Horner aidan.horner@york.ac.uk @aidanhorner
  • 2. What is open science? • Foster (fosteropenscience.eu) “Open science is about extending the principles of openness to the whole research cycle, fostering sharing and collaboration as early as possible thus entailing a systematic change to the way science and research is done” • Open access publications (already mandated) • Data sharing • Code sharing • Stimuli sharing • Pre-registration (and registered reports) • Preprints
  • 3. Why should we care? • It’s good for science • Everyone can read your papers • Other researchers can re-use your data • Experimental design and statistical approach more open – decreases risk of p-hacking etc. • And many other reasons… • It’s (increasingly) good for your CV • Some researchers include experience in OS practices as a desirable/essential on job applications • Some grant/fellowship applications require commitment to OS, and I have seen examples of reviewers including OS as a reason for scoring the application highly • It’s important for the REF
  • 4. Why should we care? • It’s important for the REF Environment “The revised template will also include a section on ‘open research’, detailing the submitting unit’s open access strategy, including where this goes above and beyond the REF open access policy requirements, and wider activity to encourage the effective sharing and management of research data. The panels will set out further guidance on this in the panel criteria.” Individual submissions “The sub-panels welcome research practice that supports reproducible science and the application of best practice in relation to use of animals in research. Examples include registered reports, pre- registration, publication of datasets, experimental materials, analytic code, and use of reporting checklists for publication purposes. These contribute to the evaluation of rigour for submitted outputs. Replication studies may be submitted as outputs and will be evaluated on the extent to which they contribute significant new knowledge, improved methods, or advance theory or practice.”
  • 5. Open Science in Psychology • Timeline: • October 2017 – Departmental survey on OS practices • January 2018 – Created the “Open Science Interest Group” • June 2018 – Held first meeting of OSIG • Discussed what open science is, and how we promote it in the department • July 2018 – connected OSIG to wider UK-OSWG • October 2018 – Held second meeting of OSIG • Discussed results of departmental survey, and where to focus attention on increasing uptake • October 2018 – Created webpage on official departmental website (https://www.york.ac.uk/psychology/research/groups/open-science/) • October 2018 – proposed funding mechanism to DRC for promoting OS
  • 6. Open Science in Psychology • The future • First “Open Science Seminar” • Tuesday week 2 summer term • Candice Morey, Cardiff University • Open to all university members • ERC workshop to introduce OS to wider department • If above successful, re-run for faculty members • Strengthen links to intra-institution groups (eg. EROS) • Strengthen links to inter-institutional groups (eg. UK-OSWG)
  • 7. What I’ve done • Sharing data • Sharing code • Preprints • Registered Report (ongoing…) https://figshare.com/ https://osf.io/
