HOUSING – A CASE STUDY
 HOUSING : Housing design is a multilayered process which requires
recall and application and knowledge of previously covered parameters of
architectural design like form and space, spatial organization and relationships.
 Concept: It enables students to design functional housing layout by simultaneously
designing residential units on a given site with respect to …..
 What are Apartments?
Apartments / flats means residential buildings constructed manner being
designed as ground floor plus more upper floors & constructed as separate
dwelling unit with common staircase.
 What are Row Houses?
Part of an unbroken line or series of houses.
A row house that is one of a row of identical houses
situated side by side and sharing common walls.
 What are twin Bungalows?
A twin home looks like duplex, but doesn’t act like a duplex.
Twin home looks like duplexes, and do have shared common
wall but the main difference is the ownership interest.

THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT IN HOUSING
DESIGN
 There is no need to assume that only one interpretation
of the profession is desirable or possible.
 The management of the design process itself must be
clarified and made explicit in terms of its justification as a
socially beneficial product.
 The current organizational model is linear, with many
“black boxes” of a series of single ideas for a parallel
series of unique objects emanating from the “in” box,
only to be modified or rejected by the “out” box.
 In other words, rather than controlling the relationships
within the black box, the architect is obliged to start from
scratch over and over again, until the desired solution is
finally approved.

3 • How a design should be?
• In a consensus situation this creates no great
problems (i.e., when client, architect and user
agree on all aspects of cultural, social and material
relationships, but becomes a tedious process in an
environment of great social and technical change.
