Definition and causes
• Pulmonary edema: fluid accumulation in the tissue and
air spaces of the lungs
• Acute pulmonary edema (APE):
– Cardinal feature of congestive heart failure
• Causes:
– Heart
– Lungs (eg: Acute Respiratory Distress
Syndrome ARDS)

Time course for the development and
resolution of ARDS
• Exudative phase (7 days):
– Alueolar edema
– Neutrophil infiltration
• Proliferative phase:
– Interstitial inflammation
– Early fihotic change
• Recovery: after 3 weeks
