1. 1. Healing Flow

Wall Sculpture

“ HEALING FLOW”

The sculpture was commissioned by the Edgewater Companies, Syracuse,

New York and fabricated at Hatfield Sculpture Fabrications, Poughkeepsie,

New York. The sculpture is fabricated from stainless steel and bronze tubing with

a finished diameter of 12' (144"). It is mounted in a 16' x 19' area above elevator

doors in the entrance foyer. The center point of the sculpture is 18' from the floor. It

can also be seen from an open stairway in the foyer and a mezzanine area creating

changing viewpoints as the viewer moves up or down the stairway or views the piece

from above. The intent of the sculpture is to convey symbolically the purpose, ideals,

and most importantly, the spirit of the profession of nursing. The outer circle

operates as a symbol of life, wholeness, and universality while also serving to create a

sense of balance between both defined space and openness. Contained within the

circle is a figure with supporting circular elements. The figure is generated from the

topmost forms which reflect the vesica picis- the space in sacred geometry created by

the intersection of two circles and symbolic of the cosmic womb, the gateway

/passageway to life; the forms also reflecting the mandorla. It then moves in a

downward spiral reflecting the caduceus of the medical symbol and the DNA-RNA

double helix. The spiraling movement also creates a sense of flowing, nurturing, and

enclosing movement. The figure can also be seen as an integral part of the other

supporting circular elements and movements which collectively speak to the rhythms,

cycles, and energies of life. One of the major movements created reflects the Alpha

and Omega, the beginning and end; another, the Yin-Yang union of opposing

elements; the union of spirit and body; of life, death, and regeneration. As a whole,

they create a balanced, interrelated, and interdependent flow; an embodiment of the

continuous, eternal energies of life.

.

William J.
