Strategic Plan
The strategic plan outlines the organization's direction for the future and a broad framework of
goals and objectives to be achieved in line with this direction.
The strategic plan typically applies across a three to five-year period, and identifies the areas
that need particular attention during this period to ensure the organization gets to where it
wants to be.

Operational Plan
The operational plan should apply to
the life of the strategic plan, but should
be reviewed on a regular basis to
ensure sufficient progress is being
made towards achieving the objectives
and so priorities can be revised as
necessary.
The operational plan details how the organization will accomplish the goals, objectives and
strategies outlined in the strategic plan.
It includes the actions to be undertaken in line with the strategic plan objectives, who are
responsible for carrying out these actions, and the time frames, costs and key performance
indicators associated with these actions.

In strategic planning, management develops a mission and long-
term objectives and determines in advance how they will be
accomplished.
In operational planning, management sets short-term objectives
and determines in advance how they will be accomplished.

SWOT Analysis
The SWOT analysis is an effective planning tool used to understand the Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business.
It usually involves specifying the objective of the organization or project and
identifying the internal and external factors that are supportive or unfavourable to
achieving that objective.
A SWOT analysis is often used as part of a strategic planning process.

When to use SWOT
• SWOT analyses are often used during strategic planning. They can serve as a
precursor to any sort of company action, such as exploring new initiatives,
making decisions about new policies, identifying possible areas for change, or
refining and redirecting efforts mid plan.
• Performing a SWOT analysis is also great way to improve business operations

• What unique or lowest-cost resources can you draw upon that others can't?
• What do people in your market see as your strengths?

Also, if you're having any difficulty identifying strengths, try writing down a list of
your organization's characteristics. Some of these will hopefully be strengths!

• What good opportunities can you spot?
• What interesting trends are you aware of?
Useful opportunities can come from such things as:
• Changes in technology and markets on both a broad and narrow scale.
• Changes in government policy related to your field.
• Changes in social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes, and so on.
• Local events.
A useful approach when looking at opportunities is to look at your strengths and ask yourself whether these open up any
opportunities. Alternatively, look at your weaknesses and ask yourself whether you could open up opportunities by
eliminating them.

impact future finance, planning and management decisions. It can enable you
(the management& clinical staff) to carry out a more comprehensive analysis.

A SWOT analysis is a tool that can provide prompts to the managers, clinical leads,
nurse instructors, nurse mentors and staff involved in the analysis of what is
effective and less effective in clinical systems and procedures, in
preparation for a operational and strategic plan.

The strategic plan typically applies across a three to five-year period, and identifies the areas that need particular attention during this period to ensure the organization gets to where it wants to be.

Also, if you're having any difficulty identifying strengths, try writing down a list of your organization's characteristics. Some of these will hopefully be strengths!

A useful approach when looking at opportunities is to look at your strengths and ask yourself whether these open up any opportunities. Alternatively, look at your weaknesses and ask yourself whether you could open up opportunities by eliminating them.

SWOT analysis for Nurses and Health care Organization A SWOT analysis is a tool that can provide prompts to the managers, clinical leads, nurse instructors, nurse mentors and staff involved in the analysis of what is effective and less effective in clinical systems and procedures, in preparation for a operational and strategic plan.
