Wasantha Weerasekera’s Dress to Kill

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel these days where fashion trend change with the bat of an
eyelid, it is becoming increasingly essential for men to pay attention to their looks
without going overboard and making a fool of themselves. In the blind rush to follow
fashion trends, men tend to ignore the fact that it is not easy to ape any look like a rugged
look that looks good on the screen or on the glossy sheets of any fashion magazine. Here
are some tips for all those men who want to put their best foot forward. There are some
basic principles that especially men tend to ignore, but if practiced could put a suave
metro sexual male to shame.

Jeans and Trousers-

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel the beauty of jeans is that they can be stylish and
comfortable at the same time and are sure to remain stylish for as long as they hold up.
Go ahead, don’t be afraid to buy more jeans wear; it is a must have for your wardrobe.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel for a cool urban style, try baggy jeans with trendy
sneakers. Oversized jeans can be worn with running shoes or sandals; they won’t look
good with formal shoes.

A bootleg pair of jeans blends well with any type of shoes, be it running shoes, sandals
and even classy shoes. This style of jeans allows you to wear trendy leather sandals with
as stylish shirt, and more sporty sandals with a plain T-shirt, if you want a casual look.
Avoid wearing very dressy shoes with jeans; these look best with pants and trousers.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel jeans should generally be worn low on your waistline;
wearing them too high exhibits the “grandfather look”.

To know if your jeans fit properly try them without a belt; if they fit and stay on without
having to wear a belt, it means they will look even better once you slip one on. Also, be
sure you can still breathe when you have them on.

If you have a protruding middle try, wear your pants starting from the natural waist. Go
for pleated pants as they make the flow to be smooth down from the belly area. The
pleats also allow the pants to have enough room for stretch. Short men should avoid cuffs
on their jeans and trousers as it will beef up the legs and make them appear stumpy.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel self-pinstriped dark colored pants make you look taller
and thinner. To flaunt a broader upper body team them with a light colored shirt.

Pleats and cuffs are traditional and functional. Pleats let you sit down comfortably and
cuffs add weight to the bottoms allowing for proper drape.

Shirts and T-shirts-

Short shirts are in vogue and a rage among teenagers and men alike. The advantage with
a short shirt is that it can be worn with a suit to give you a complete semi-formal look.
Since they are not supposed to be tucked in, they can be worn with a linen suit for a semi-
formal look.
Avoid shirts that have prominent patterns. Try subtle colors like beige in self-prints that
do not stand out. Pin-stripped shirts never go out of style.

A plain crisp well fitted shirt worn with pants that are tailor made and customized to your
body, forms the most desirable combo.

Button-down collars are best avoided. Instead, experiment with the plethora of
fantastically stylish collar types available. From narrow spreads to wide spreads, the
collar width and size is a great way to add detail to a regular dress shirt in a way that the
stifling structure of a button-down collar can’t.

Formal and Leisure Wear-

The first rule relating to work gear is to never ever wear jeans or sneakers to work. Work
gear should be elegant and formal. Black, grey, khaki, and brown chinos would work fine
when mixed and matched with a number of formal shirts. Flat front pants with a slight
flair (boot leg) at the bottom look chic.

For important meetings make use of power dressing. Wear a full suit to make the right
first impression.

The common mistake many men make with the term “formal attire”- A black-tie event is
one in which you would wear a tuxedo; whereas formal attire requires you to wear a suit
and tie- think cocktail-appropriate attire.

Linen probably is the best fabrics for leisure wear. Pants or even better pajamas of linen
teamed with shirts of soft cotton or t-shirts complete the look. Linen is available in a wide
variety of colors and there’s a lot to experiment with.

Suits and Jackets-

Jackets and overcoats are symbols of authority. However the first thing to keep in mind is
that the bottom buttons of men’s jackets are not designed to be buttoned.

Single breasted suits can have one, two, three or more buttons. Two and three button
jackets are classic. When wearing a two button jacket only the top button is fastened.

With three button jackets, you can close the middle, or middle and top button. Some suits
are made so that the lapels roll to the middle button. On those suits you leave the top
button unfastened.

Four of more button jackets are designed to fasten all the buttons, even the bottom one
but only if it can be closed without a noticeable pulling of the fabric, it is ok to close else
leave it open.
Double breasted suits are the more formal of the two styles and can have four to six
buttons with one or two “to button”.

Suit and sports jackets should fit properly which includes showing 1/4'” to ½” of linen or
shirtsleeve at the jacket sleeve.

At times the pockets of suit jackets are sewn shut to preserve the structure of the suit.
Keep the stitching in place with any suit you buy. However, some casual blazers- like
velvet or tweed blazers—also have the same kind of stitching. In this case, for a more
casual look, remove the stitching.

Ties-

Ties are hot and should be worn more often It does not matter what color it is. According
to fashion industry’s great Giorgio Armani, as long as you are wearing a tie it does not
matter whether it matches your outfit or not.

The proper width of a tie has traditionally been 3 1/4'”. The length should be
approximately 56 inches. A longer tie, for taller men, may go up to 60 inches.

The knot should be in the middle of your collar and the wide end of your tie should end
around the middle of your belt buckle. Ties should reach your belt line.

Experiment with unconventional colors. Go bold, subtle, wild, or subdued with patterns.
Stripes or dots, just about anything works.

To check whether your tie has been perfectly tied check for a dimple below the knot.
Properly knotted ties have a dimple under the knot.

Never wear a short sleeve shire with a tie.

Hang up your ties: It helps take out some of the wrinkles. Knit ties can be stretched when
hung, so gently roll them up and store them in a drawer. For traveling, loosely roll ties
and place them inside a pair of socks or a tie case.

Ideas on Belts by Wasantha Weerasekera-

Belt is one accessory that can make or break the entire ensemble. Go with the basis for
work wear i.e. a thin leather belt with a not-so-wide buckle. When wearing a belt with
trousers or any other formal outfit, avoid wearing stylish buckles. But when you are
partying whatever your contemporary or vintage all looks perfect if you have the queer
eye for picking up stuff.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel the color of your belt should always match the color of
your shoes. Also when wearing a belt with an official attire stick to the basics like black
and brown.
Never wear a belt with suspenders unless you want to give the image that your pants are
falling.

Suede and other leather belts can be worn with formal wear. Cotton, nylon and beaded
belts with wide buckles give a very trendy and casual look.

Ideas on Shoes and Socks by Wasantha Weerasekera-

For sneakers, stick with thin, white, ankle-length socks if you are wearing them with
shorts. If they are being sported with jeans, opt for a light or charcoal grey sock.

As a rule of thumb, avoid wearing white socks with jeans at all costs; they tent to stand
out like a sore thumb.

It is perfectly acceptable to go socks less with loafers. Also socks should preferably be of
dark colors as white looks too stark.

Do not hesitate to wear shoes with heels if you are…well vertically challenged. Well
heeled shoes will make your pants seem more well cut.

If you are wearing a suit, wear lace up shoes. Black shoes work well with navy, grey or
black pants. Brown shoes are best suited to tan, brown beige, green and other darker earth
tones. Burgundy shoes go best with khaki, lighter browns, blue and grey. Tan shoes look
great with lighter earth tones, blue beige, lighter tan or whole.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, believe the color of your socks should match the color of your
trousers.

Trousers should be long enough to cover your socks, and socks should cover your shins
even when you cross your legs.

Do’s and Don’ts from Wasantha Weerasekera-

Do’s-

Go for studded belts, colored shoes and bracelets.

Cufflinks are a rage.

Get body piercing and tattoos if you can carry it off well.

Stick to simple watches.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will say pack diamond, antique silver cuff links.
Carry a fountain pen.

Go for simple leather belts.

Wear well starched, neatly ironed cotton shirts, they always give a good impression.

Maintain your shoes well. After use always get them cleaned and polished and put away
in a dustproof place.

Don’ts-

Never overdo accessories.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will ask you to avoid clutter. There is simply no need to wear
four gold chains at a time.

Avoid being a copycat. Things that look good on others will not necessarily look good on
you.

Don’t play with your perfume. No one wants to feel as if they have just entered the
perfume section of a shop when you pass by. Apply just the right amount of perfume.

I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will say thank to you for reading the article and believe you
would have been found it beneficial for you.

Linen probably is the best fabrics for leisure wear. Pants or even better pajamas of linen teamed with shirts of soft cotton or t-shirts complete the look. Linen is available in a wide variety of colors and there’s a lot to experiment with. Suits and Jackets- Jackets and overcoats are symbols of authority. However the first thing to keep in mind is that the bottom buttons of men’s jackets are not designed to be buttoned. Single breasted suits can have one, two, three or more buttons. Two and three button jackets are classic. When wearing a two button jacket only the top button is fastened. With three button jackets, you can close the middle, or middle and top button. Some suits are made so that the lapels roll to the middle button. On those suits you leave the top button unfastened. Four of more button jackets are designed to fasten all the buttons, even the bottom one but only if it can be closed without a noticeable pulling of the fabric, it is ok to close else leave it open.
  • 4. Double breasted suits are the more formal of the two styles and can have four to six buttons with one or two “to button”. Suit and sports jackets should fit properly which includes showing 1/4'” to ½” of linen or shirtsleeve at the jacket sleeve. At times the pockets of suit jackets are sewn shut to preserve the structure of the suit. Keep the stitching in place with any suit you buy. However, some casual blazers- like velvet or tweed blazers—also have the same kind of stitching. In this case, for a more casual look, remove the stitching. Ties- Ties are hot and should be worn more often It does not matter what color it is. According to fashion industry’s great Giorgio Armani, as long as you are wearing a tie it does not matter whether it matches your outfit or not. The proper width of a tie has traditionally been 3 1/4'”. The length should be approximately 56 inches. A longer tie, for taller men, may go up to 60 inches. The knot should be in the middle of your collar and the wide end of your tie should end around the middle of your belt buckle. Knit ties can be stretched when hung, so gently roll them up and store them in a drawer. For traveling, loosely roll ties and place them inside a pair of socks or a tie case. Ideas on Belts by Wasantha Weerasekera- Belt is one accessory that can make or break the entire ensemble. Go with the basis for work wear i.e. a thin leather belt with a not-so-wide buckle. When wearing a belt with trousers or any other formal outfit, avoid wearing stylish buckles. But when you are partying whatever your contemporary or vintage all looks perfect if you have the queer eye for picking up stuff. I, Wasantha Weerasekera, feel the color of your belt should always match the color of your shoes. Also when wearing a belt with an official attire stick to the basics like black and brown.
  • 5. Never wear a belt with suspenders unless you want to give the image that your pants are falling. Suede and other leather belts can be worn with formal wear. Cotton, nylon and beaded belts with wide buckles give a very trendy and casual look. Ideas on Shoes and Socks by Wasantha Weerasekera- For sneakers, stick with thin, white, ankle-length socks if you are wearing them with shorts. If they are being sported with jeans, opt for a light or charcoal grey sock. As a rule of thumb, avoid wearing white socks with jeans at all costs; they tent to stand out like a sore thumb. It is perfectly acceptable to go socks less with loafers. Also socks should preferably be of dark colors as white looks too stark. Do not hesitate to wear shoes with heels if you are…well vertically challenged. Well heeled shoes will make your pants seem more well cut. If you are wearing a suit, wear lace up shoes. Black shoes work well with navy, grey or black pants. Brown shoes are best suited to tan, brown beige, green and other darker earth tones. Burgundy shoes go best with khaki, lighter browns, blue and grey. Tan shoes look great with lighter earth tones, blue beige, lighter tan or whole. I, Wasantha Weerasekera, believe the color of your socks should match the color of your trousers. Trousers should be long enough to cover your socks, and socks should cover your shins even when you cross your legs. Do’s and Don’ts from Wasantha Weerasekera- Do’s- Go for studded belts, colored shoes and bracelets. Cufflinks are a rage. Get body piercing and tattoos if you can carry it off well. Stick to simple watches. I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will say pack diamond, antique silver cuff links.
  • 6. Carry a fountain pen. Go for simple leather belts. Wear well starched, neatly ironed cotton shirts, they always give a good impression. Maintain your shoes well. After use always get them cleaned and polished and put away in a dustproof place. Don’ts- Never overdo accessories. I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will ask you to avoid clutter. There is simply no need to wear four gold chains at a time. Avoid being a copycat. Things that look good on others will not necessarily look good on you. Don’t play with your perfume. No one wants to feel as if they have just entered the perfume section of a shop when you pass by. Apply just the right amount of perfume. I, Wasantha Weerasekera, will say thank to you for reading the article and believe you would have been found it beneficial for you.
