Summary of findings
Rise in the global ultra wealthy
population and its total wealth
In 2016, the world’s ultra high net worth population grew by 3.5% to 226,450
Their combined wealth also increased by 1.5% to $27trn
North America and Asia are the
growth front-runners as Latin
America falters
There were sharp regional fluctuations in dollar-denominated wealth creation
North America and Asia recorded the only significant rises in wealth in 2016 (+5.1% and +3.5% respectively)
Diverging performance across
the world’s major economies
Currency movements were a key driver of UHNW wealth trends in 2016
US, Japan, India and Indonesia experienced solid gains for the world’s wealthiest while those in the UK, Russia, Mexico and Brazil suffered substantial losses
Buoyed by a stronger dollar, rising equity markets and a robust tech sector, the US consolidated its dominant position as the world’s leading UHNW country
The NewYork metropolitan
area bolstered its position as the
world’s largest UHNW city
Hong Kong and Tokyo both maintained their top-three city status
London remains the largest UHNW city in Europe but its lead over Paris narrowed sharply
Though China has the world’s third-largest ultra wealthy population, Shanghai came in as only joint 29th
largest UHNW city, emphasising that robust wealth
creation is occurring not just within China’s top-tier cities

Total UHNW figures increased – with rising population numbers
and total wealth
Global UHNW population and wealth change
§ In 2016, the global ultra wealthy population grew by 3.5% to
226,450 individuals, a partial recovery from a sharp fall a year
earlier
§ Their combined wealth also increased in 2016, expanding by 1.5%
to $27trn
§ The average net worth of the ultra wealthy declined for the first
time since 2013
§ With the exception of Latin America and the Caribbean, all regions
globally showed growth or stability in GDP and stock markets
§ However, all regions experienced currency depreciation against the
US$
§ The growth in UHNW population and wealth in each region will
be determined by the net outcome of these competing effects
5. 5
North America is home to over 36% of the world’s UHNW
population, Europe to 28%
Where the ultra wealthy are – regional distribution
6. 6
Almost half of the global ultra wealthy population had a net
worth of between $30m and $50m
§ Billionaires account for just 1.1%
of the total number of ultra
wealthy individuals but control
almost 28% of the world’s
combined ultra wealth
§ All tiers of global ultra wealthy
population expanded in size and
recorded an increase in net worth
with the exception of billionaires
§ Billionaires registered a 3.1%
decline in numbers and 3.7% hit
to their combined US dollar
wealth
Wealth distribution amongst UHNWs
7. 7
The top 30 countries account for around 93% of both the world’s
ultra wealthy population
§ Of the top 30 countries, 12 are in
Europe, nine are in Asia, four are in
the Middle East, two are in North
America and two in Latin America,
and one is in the Pacific region
§ The leading five countries (the US,
China, Japan, Germany and the
UK) account for almost 57% of the
global ultra wealthy population and
just short of 55% of UHNW
wealth
§ US, Japan, India and Indonesia
experienced solid gains for the
world’s wealthiest while those in
the UK, Russia, Mexico and Brazil
suffered substantial losses

Global financial cities dominate the list of top UHNW locations
§ The NewYork metropolitan (metro) area bolstered
its position as the world’s largest UHNW city in
2016, with the number of ultra wealthy individuals
rising strongly to more than 8,300
§ Two other global financial hubs, Hong Kong and
Tokyo, maintained their top-three city status, with
the Japanese capital recording the largest increase
in UHNW population (in percentage terms) of all
30 leading cities
§ NewYork and Hong Kong were also the top two
billionaire cities as cited in our recent Billionaire
Census 2017, though Tokyo was ranked lower, in
16th position
§ London remains the largest UHNW city in Europe
but its lead over Paris narrowed sharply
Top UHNW cities
10. 10
By 2021, we expect the global ultra wealthy population to total
299,000, an increase of 72,550 over 5 years
Five year forecast in UHNW population and wealth
§The level of UHNW
wealth is projected to
rise to $35.7trn, which
implies an additional
$8.7trn of newly created
wealth over the next five
years
