Paris is known for its large avenues and streets
aligned with high-end boutiques, though what
makes Paris even more special are its hidden gems.
The best boutiques and restaurants are the ones that
are perfectly hidden from the naked eye, needing

kept secrets.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the iconic

Hidden boutiques, VIP spas and exquisite restaurants are only some of the things that make the French capital
a glorious getaway for many. This month we take you on a privileged tour and share with you our favourite
addresses that make-up some of Paris’s well-kept secrets.
R
ue Saint-Honoré is famous for its
high-end boutiques, with all the
famous brands vying for a space
on the most popular shopping
street in the fashion capital. And
while the boutiques that are
already proudly installed on the street make for
great shopping, it is the hidden boutiques on
that street that make shopping in Paris even
more special. One of these well-kept secrets is
found just across the road from Colette, hidden
in a quaint courtyard. Mad Lords, an accessories
haven, is a multi-brand boutique offering limited
edition leather goods and jewellery as well as
vintage pieces. Showcased in an apartment-
like boutique, the jewellery and accessories are
predominantly rock-inspired but you could
also find dainty pieces if you are looking for
less statement-making items as well as fun
accessories such as Linda Farrow sunglasses.
In another hidden courtyard on rue Saint-
Honoré is the Caroline di Marchi boutique. The
handbag designer’s hidden space is a charming
address in the fashion capital that unfortunately
if you do not know exists you could easily walk
past without ever discovering the sublime bags
that are found within. Her signature bag is the
Cubo, and is available in a myriad of colours,
from bright orange to subdued beige, and is an
ideal day bag, while her woven leather clutches
with seashell detailing are a sexy accessory to
make your outfit standout in a crowd.
On the other side of the city, overlooking
the Panthéon is the relatively new spa
Or’Normes, which opened last year in one of
the oldest parts of Paris. If you’re looking for a
getaway within a getaway this space is ideal,
as it will transport you to Marrakech as you
step into a Riad-inspired decor. The signature
treatment here is the Initiation au Rituel
Oriental, which includes a traditional Moroccan
hammam body scrub. An olive paste is applied
to your body before entering the hammam
where the humidity opens your pores and lets
the miracle paste penetrate your skin. After
twenty minutes, the paste is scrubbed off your
body using an exfoliating glove leaving your skin
as smooth as silk. A great treatment to get you
bikini-ready. Open seven days a week with the
possibility of privatising the whole

La Chambre Noire is back and tagged the
“place to be and be seen”. The ephemeral
bar, open from the 15th to the 23rd of May
in the J.W. Marriott hotel, has been designed
by international rap artist Theophilus London
and boasts a terrace and a bar where you
can sample Belvedere vodka-based cocktails
mixed by talented mixologists. The exclusive
bar is set in a hotel suite and under the artistic
direction of Theophilus has been transformed
into underground Brooklyn. And of course
Theophilus himself will be spinning in the DJ
booth along with his very VIP guests, making
for a star-studded night out not to be missed.

and became the talented writer Victor Hugo’s
favourite confectionary and chocolate brand.

It is a welcoming world that awaits for
large men inside the Capelstore set
on the discreetly elegant Boulevard
Malesherbes in one of the Parisian
capital’s most upscale neighbourhoods.
The house, a Parisian institution for 55
years now, carries a full range of finely
crafted ready-to wear men’s clothing in
large and non-standard sizes adapted
to a host of different shapes.
The great men’s brands are found
exclusively here in very large and super
large sizes, like Ralph Lauren’s Polo
Line for big and tall men and there
are big and roomy Lacoste polo shirts.
Looking for a Tommy Hilfiger ranging
in size from 2XL to 5XL, or Hugo Boss
in extra large, this is the place. There
are also fashions from the Italian house
of fashion for men, Pal Zileri. Tall and
thin, small and stout, Capelstore carries
some 50 different sizes ranging from
2XL to 8XL and from sizes 50 to 82, and
the boutique welcomes new collections
throughout the year
The house features three of its own
lines of clothing especially conceived
in big sizes and superbly crafted in
European factories specialised in the
large. Fine materials and superb trims
and finishings are hallmarks of the
Capelstore’s own brands. Capel Paris
is a fine line devoted to classic city
wear of timeless, elegant, comfortable
fashion in beautiful fabrics while the
Blue Capel line is all about perfectly
designed sportswear. The high-end
Ligne Capel Rouge line is a real treasure
with the clothing in this line made
in only the finest of fabrics including
cashmere from Loro Piano and superb
wools and silks from the leading Italian
fabric makers. And now Capelstore with
its Les Ateliers department is offering
a semi-finishing tailoring service for a
totally perfect fit if you have the time or
visit Paris regularly.
Exceptional service is, too, an integral
part of the Capelstore universe. The
relaxing atmosphere is conducive to
browsing while a friendly and highly
competent staff can be called upon for
assistance, excellent advice and special
requests. The house does alterations,
provides complimentary delivery to
your hotel or home, takes care of the
duty free tax for you and ships abroad.
And the nice thing is that the
Capelstore covers the entire wardrobe
from under garments to ties (1.55m
long ties), bags and big belts, shoes
to size 50, shirts with three different
sleeve lengths, in short everything that
a man could want.

This new name in candles introduces not only original scents but also brings an
original design element to spice up your décor with. Created by Khim Asriel and Olivier
Ossipoff, the brand’s first collection of candles, Kartomancie, is inspired by tarot cards
and features five scents with provocative names including Le Diable (The Devil), which
has notes of oud and Espelette pepper, and L’Amoureux (The Lover), which has notes of
whisky and Bulgarian Rose. Poured into a trompe-l’oeil designed porcelain jar made in
Limoges, the French-made candle is not only seductive in scent but also visually.

ARTS & ATTRACTIONS
EXPERIENCING
THE ABSTRACT
Through an exhibition entitled Abstract Experiences – Beyond the Real, the
Opera Gallery takes the visitor into the world of the abstract and its various
manifestations. Allowing for a new look into the radical and decisive turning
point undertaken by art at the beginning of the 20th century, the abstract,
a visual language of shapes, forms, lines and colours, gives rise to often
emotionally moving works. A very special colour-filled show unfolds inside
the gallery with works like Damien Hirst’s intriguing Circle Spin Painting, the
optical illusions of Victor Vasarely while Pierre Soulages shows us that it is
possible to express both black and light at the same time. It is a world that
transports us outside of the real world into a seemingly parallel world of
another’s vision. – Patricia Valicenti
