expectations on both sides
ā€“ matters a lot more than the legal side
ā€“ not observing the expectation hurts both sides

Brain chemicals
ā€¢ Neurotransmitters affecting happiness
ā€“ dopamine makes you do things: short-term reward,
highly addictive
ā€“ serotonin is related to pride, feeling important, joint
achievement
ā€“ oxytocin relates to trust, kindness
ā€¢ Stress hormone: cortisol
ā€“ inhibits oxytocin
ā€“ is bad for your body, physically as well as mentally

Happiness from without
ā€¢ ā€œDoing/achieving/eating X will make me happyā€
ā€¢ Reward from external sources: the dopamine hit
ā€¢ It works very briefly, not long term
ā€¢ Can be compulsive
ā€¢ Watch out for the patterns
Goals, ambition
and success
Goals, ambition, success
ā€¢ Goals and ambition are positive.
ā€¢ But you need to ask yourself why:
ā€“ Why do I pursue this particular goal/ambition?
ā€“ What does success mean to me?
ā€“ And what will it bring me?
ā€¢ If you donā€™t define success, then success will not make
you happy

ā€¢ Everybody wants to be respected
ā€“ But the people who know you and like you already
respect you.
ā€“ Why does the respect of strangers matter to you?
ā€“ Itā€™s an imposed model of success: social hierarchy
ā€“ Careful, itā€™s a trap!
ā€œThose who matter donā€™t mind and
those who mind donā€™t matterā€

Happiness from within
ā€¢ Itā€™s your reaction to a situation that
determines your state of mind
ā€¢ Self-awareness, mindfulness
ā€¢ Calm and fulfillment: serotonin
