2. THE ETHNIC ARCHITECTURE
• All kinds of old architecture can be found in ethno linguistic communities is
what we call Ethnic Architecture here in the Philippines.
• These old or ethnic architecture were all inspired by the environment like the
climate, vegetation, and fauna.
3. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
• Ethnic structures have similar characteristics as of the other countries in
Southeast Asia, wherein, they use pile-construction, hip or gable roof, and the
use wood, vegetation, and mud.
• Bamboo is the most preferred kind of wood like the rest of Southeast Asia and
is mostly used for post, flooring, siding, roofing, and other parts of a structure.
4. • Coconut wood, fronds, “bakawan” (mangrove), some hardwoods, pinewoods,
stones were also used.
6. THE “BAHAY KUBO”
• Tagalog=“bahay” (house); Spanish=“cubo”
(cube)
• Seacoasts, riverbanks, roads, highways, fields,
groves
• “Nipa Hut”
• Established during the pre-colonial period
• Shelter of lowland Christians

characteristics of traditional ethnic houses
and structures the “bahay kubo” have
push-out or sliding windows.

9. PARTS OF THE “BAHAY KUBO”
• Bulwagan- living room or the multipurpose room
• Silid-serves as the bedroom
• Balkon- the porch that opens to the living room (bulwagan)
• Kusina- kitchen with a separate roof
• Batalan- the back porch and serve as the area for cleaning and washing;
sometimes use as a bathroom
