POWER ELECTRONICS CHALLENGES IN PHOTOVOLTAICS
DC electricity risk factors
The risk
associated
with DC
electricity
depends on
several
factors
• DC electricity risk is not the same for all types
of installations and PV systems, and it depends
on different factors:
• Size of installation
• Usage
• Maximum voltage level at a given part of the
DC circuit
• Possible presence of non-trained persons, such
as in residential PV installation
• Ground-mounted or rooftop/facade
installations
• …

• Therefore the protection device requirements
may be very different from one application to
another.

WHERE ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR POWER ELECTRONICS PLAYERS IN PV?
Power electronics components for 1,500V DC PV systems
The system
voltage
increase from
600VDC or
1,000VDC to
1,500VDC can
reduce the
installed
system cost.
• The price of an
installed PV system
has continuously
decreased in the past
years.
• The current system
prices are so low, that
any small increase in
price for any
component might have
a strong impact on
project economical
feasibility.
• Current PV systems
are based almost
exclusively on 600
VDC or 1,000VDC
electrical circuits.
• A 1,500VDC system
is among the easiest
way to reduce the
installed system cost:

ONSHORE vs. OFFSHORE
From the power electronics point of view
Onshore wind
turbine is
already a
mature
technology.
Onshore Offshore
• Smaller power range turbines are
used (average ~2.5MW).
• DFIG turbine converters are mainly
used in onshore installations.
• HVAC transmission lines are required
for connection to the grid.
• Sometimes HVDC is used for long distances
• xxkV–1.7kV IGBT modules are used.
• xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
• Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
• HVDC transmission lines are preferred
between the offshore installation and the grid
connection on the shore (for >xx km)
• Higher voltage (xxxkV–xxkV) devices are
needed. Mainly IGBT and IGCT press packs.

TIDAL ENERGY TURBINES
Tidal vs. wind turbines
• Tidal turbines
convert the kinetic
energy of tidal
stream to
electricity.
• Their principle is
similar to wind
turbines but they
use tidal stream
instead of wind.
Because of the
higher density of
water relative to
air, an individual
tidal turbine can
provide greater
power at low tidal
flow velocities
compared to a
wind generator
with similar wind
speed and rotor
diameter.

IS THE INTERMITTENT CHARACTER OF PV AND WIND A REAL PROBLEM?
The
intermittent
character of
PV and wind is
not a real
problem and
can be solved
by many
different
solutions.

Is intermittency of PV and wind electricity generation a real problem or just a consequence of
current grid and energy regulation systems configurations?
Electricity not always available when
needed and difficult to forecast with a
very high accuracy
Electricity not always available when needed and
not always used when available.
Customer behavior is difficult to predict with a
high accuracy.
Electricity produced even when not
needed. Difficult and costly to follow
rapid variations of demand.
Combination of several (same) electricity
sources with different characteristics
Not matching
well
Not matching well neither!
But the solution has been in place
for a long time and the grid has
been adequately built.
Better consumer behavior
forecasting
Better weather forecasting

the possible
solutions

ELECTRICITY STORAGE AND RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY SOURCES
Electricity storage solutions needed to deal with intermittent electricity generation
Large PV and wind
deployment calls for
suitable electricity
storage solutions.
The size and
modularity of
battery storage
systems match very
well with the size
and modularity of
PV and wind
installations,
resulting in a large
variety of
applications.

Matching of the battery system size with PV and wind systems
High
modularity of

with the high

systems.
• Suitable energy storage is a
solution to solve the
intermittency issues of PV
and wind generated
electricity.
• PV or wind system coupled
with a suitable energy
storage system (e.g. battery,
pumped-hydro energy
storage, compressed air
energy storage) can deliver
the clean electricity WHEN
andWHERE needed without
the generation curtailment
or grid stability issues.

a pre-release discount to the Buyer
The Seller shall by no means be responsible for any delay in
respect of article 2.2 above, and including incases where a
new event or access to new contradictory information would
require for the analyst extra time to compute or compare
the data in order to enable the Seller to deliver a high quality
Products.
2.3 The mailing of the Product will occur only upon payment
by the Buyer, in accordance with the conditions contained
in article 3.
2.4. The mailing is operated through electronic means either by
email via the sales department or automatically online via an

download or receipt of the Product.
2.5 The person receiving the Products on behalf of the Buyer
shall immediately verify the quality of the Products and their
conformity to the order. Any claim for apparent defects or
for non-conformity shall be sent in writing to the Seller within
8 days of receipt of the Products. For this purpose, the Buyer
agrees to produce sufficient evidence of such defects. .
