Toussaint Louverture was born a slave in Haiti in 1743. He married Suzanne Simone Baptiste in 1777 and they raised their three sons on the Breda plantation. Louverture led the Haitian Revolution starting in 1791 until his death in 1803, initially fighting for the French but later siding with the Haitians, leading them to eventual independence from France despite his capture and death in French imprisonment.

on December 31, 1803 by Jean-
Jacques Dessalines.
