The University of Dhaka was established in 1921 and held its first convocation in 1923. It has since grown from 3 faculties and 12 departments to 13 faculties and 71 departments. Originally focused on residential teaching, it became more affiliating in 1947 and was granted autonomy in 1973 after Bangladesh's liberation war. Today it enrolls over 33,000 students through a competitive admission process and confers degrees on more than 1.6 million graduates, making it the oldest and largest public university in Bangladesh.

4. The first day of July 1921
• The founder of the University of
Dhaka was Nawab Bahadur Syed
Nawab Ali Chowdhury.
• The university was set up in the
RAMNA area on 600 acres of land.
6. 22 Feburary,1923.
• The first convocation of the University of Dcca
now the University of Dhaka was held on 22
feburary,1923.
• The Governor of Bengal and the Chancellor of
the University of Dacca, Loard Lytton speech
at the first Convocation.
7. 1947 & 1952
• Since 1947 the University was given an
affiliating mandate in place of an exclusive
residential-cum-teaching character.
• BENGALI LANGUAGE MOVEMENT
On 21 March 1948, Mohammed Ali Jinnah
declared that Urdu would be the only state
language of both east &west Pakistan.
9. WAR OF LIBERATION
• On 2 March 1971,
• The dreadful night of March 25, 1971.
A memorial to victims of killing among teachers at the hand of the
Pakistani army .
10. University of Dhaka Order 1973
• Just after the creation of Bangladesh, the
government proclaimed the University of Dhaka
Order 1973 whereby democratic norms and
autonomy became integral features of the
institution.
