In this talk I describe the approach I follow in my courses in first year engineering. The course requires student to participate actively in tasks both before and during the face-to-face sessions.

systems class, and things are not looking good. At least a
third of the students are texting or sleeping. Many of them
clearly don’t understand much of what you’re saying (their
midterm exam grades prove it), but they never ask
questions.
It’s been like this since the beginning of the semester and
you are getting desperate, so you decide to try something
different.
