BATCH-40
INTRODUCTION
This project aims to lower this barrier in communication.
It is based on the need of developing an electronic device that
can translate sign language into speech in order to make the
communication take place between the mute communities with
the general public possible.
A Wireless data gloves is used which is normal cloth driving
gloves fitted with flex sensors along the length of each finger.
Mute people can use the gloves to perform hand gesture and it
will be converted into speech so that normal people can
understand their expression
A gesture in a sign language is a particular movement of the
hands with a specific shape made out of them.

COMPONENTS USED:
Regulated power supply.
Flex Sensor.
APR9600.
PIC Microcontroller 16F877A.
LED Indicators.
 LCD
METHODOLOGY USED:
Microcontroller based control system with regulated
power supply.
Flex sensor.
PIC microcontroller.
Voice recording system.
POWER SUPPLY:
PIC microcontroller works on 5 volt power
supply. To ensure proper working of the
system we need a reliable power supply.
The components used to make a power
supply are:
LM7805.
Electrolytic capacitor for filtration.
IC7805
 IC7805 is a 3-Terminal 1A
positive voltage Regulator.
 We have used this IC because
we need a 5volt power supply for
microcontroller and this IC outputs
maximum of 5 volt of supply.
 It employs internal current
limiting, thermal shut down and
safe operating area protection,
making it essentially indestructible.
ELECTROLYTE CAPACITOR
Here electrolyte capacitor
are used to smooth the
power fluctuations and
ripple from power supply.
 ceramic capacitor of 0.1
microfarad are used for the
same purpose in parallel
with LCD and
microcontroller.
PIC MICROCONTROLLER:
 PIC 16F877 is a 40-pin 8-Bit CMOS FLASH
Microcontroller.
 The core architecture is high-performance RISC CPU with
only 35 single word instructions.
 All single cycle instructions take only one instruction cycle
except for program branches which take two cycles.
 It has two types of internal memories: program memory and
data memory.
 Program memory is provided by 8K words (or 8K*14 bits) of
FLASH Memory.
 Data memory has two sources, One type of data memory is a
368-byte RAM (random access memory) and the other is
256-byte EEPROM (Electrically erasable programmable
ROM).
PIN DIAGRAM OF
PIC 16F877A.
LCD
LCD displays are widely used in many
applications like mobile phones, robotics, DVD
players, Measurement instruments etc.
 Intelligent LCD displays are very capable
because they can display complete ASCII
character set and even graphics.
 These displays are easily connected with micro
controller and microprocessors.
 LCD displays are complete embedded system in
them, because it include microcontroller, RAM
and ROM.
Alphanumeric LCD
Block Diagram of lcd display
FLEX SENSOR:
 The Flex Sensor patented technology is based on
resistive carbon elements.
 Flex sensors are normally attached to the glove using
needle and thread.
 They require a 5-volt input and output between 0 and 5
V, the resistivity varying with the sensor’s degree of
bend and the voltage output changing accordingly.
 It will only change resistance in one direction. An
unflexed sensor has a resistance of about 10,000 ohms.
As the flex sensor is bent, the resistance increases to 30-
40 kilo ohms at 90 degrees.
VOICE PROCESSING
SYSTEM: APR 9600 single chip voice recorder and playback device from Aplus
integrated circuits makes use of a proprietary analog storage technique
implemented using flash non- volatic memory process in which each cell is
capable of storing up to 256 voltage levels.
 Microphone amplifier, automatic gain control ( AGC ) circuits, internal anti
aliasing filter, integrated output amplifier and message management are some
of the features of the APR 9600.
 Voice signal from the microphone is fed into the chip through a differential
amplifier.
 An internal anti-aliasing filter automatically adjusts its response according to
the sampling frequency selected.
 Then the signal is processed into the memory array through a combination of
the sample and hold circuits and analogue read/write circuit
 The incoming voice signals are sampled and the instantaneous voltage
samples are stored in the non- volatic flash memory cells in the 8 bit binary
encoded format.
 During playback, the stored signals are retrived from the memory, smoothed
to form a continuous signal level at the speaker
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:
In this circuit diagram, power supply is given by
microcontroller 7805 which maximum can give 5 volt.
Here 10 ohms resistor are in parallel with flex sensor which
again have the resistance of 10 ohm. On bending it changes its
resistance and it increases.
It has 8 Leds which is in parallel to voice processor and in
series with LCD so that we get to know that board is taking
response or not.
Now in PIC16F887A pin 2,3,4,and 5 have an inbuilt ADC
which are directly connected to flex sensor.
LCD is connected to port D of PIC and voice processor is
connected to port C. It has a RESET button which is only used to
execute the program from the starting.
EXPLANATION OF CIRCUIT
DIAGRAM:
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM OF VOICE PROCESSING SYSTEM:
Switches are connected at port A of APR 9600 which
are used to record voice as APR 9600 is a voice
recorder or a playback IC.
Voice filter and processing are on Pin 17 and 18 .
On 14 AND 15 there is speaker which speak up all
the recorded voice.
electrolyte capacitor and paper capacitor are used to
filter analog and digital signal.

FEATURES AND
APPLICATIONS:
Features:
Low cost.
Compact system.
Flexible to users.
It takes less power to operate system.
Applications:
Physically challenged persons.
Conveying information related operations
CONCLUSION:
 Sign language is a useful tool to ease the communication
between the deaf or mute community and the normal people.
Yet there is a communication barrier between these
communities with normal people.
 This project aims to lower the communication gap between the
deaf or mute community and the normal world.
 This project was meant to be a prototype to check the feasibility
of recognizing sign language using sensor gloves.
 With this project the deaf or mute people can use the gloves to
perform sign language and it will be converted in to speech so
that normal people can easily understand.
 The main feature of this project is that the gesture recognizer is
a standalone system, which is applicable in daily life
