1. Evaluation Task 1
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. Media conventions
O Every media form, whether a comic book, a
sport commentary in the radio, or a music
video, has a set of conventions that it ought
to follow
O Following conventions allows for the target
audience to identify the type and genre of
that media and entice them to follow, view,
listen or read that media product
3. Music videos of a new artist
O In terms of music videos, if it is a new artist, the
music video must show a large performance
strand to be able to present the artist to the
audience. This will allow them to be recognised
4. Our genres
O Singer song-writer
O Alternative
O Pop
O Downtempo - soul
O Indie
5. Lighting
O The lighting we used is between flashy and
strobby, especially in our string strand. This is in
line with the alternative genre of the song
Deadcrush by Alt-J https://

(1’02”). Here is a comparison with our video
https://

Our lighting however had more of a stylised look
because of the blue suggesting more of a pop
atmosphere https://

6. Costume
O Singer song-writters tend to wear
quite simple clothes in their video.
Such as Passenger in the song let her
go.
O We also wanted to make it quite
stylistic to give more of a compacted
look, so we dressed him in all white.
This choice of colour also helps
suggest his innocence and purity of
heart that we want to show. This
more stylised look could link to
James Blake’s video Overgrown
7. Singer song-writter vibe
O To give the impression of singer song-writer we
predominately had a performance based video
like Niall Horan’s video too much to ask. https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljXSjIph5ZM&index=7&list=RDnBm
. This suggests the conventions of a singer
song-writer as these sort of videos show how the
artist feels in touch with their music. In our
video we also help show this connection to the
music through the mirrors which symbolise he is
heartbroken and suggest emotional fragility

(1’57”)
8. Type of shots
O We used beauty shots to emphasise the artist’s
emotional fragility from the emotion of his singing. We
also used it to create the star image and make him look
flawless.
O This is usually done to female pop artists to make them
look flawless and emphasise their sexuality and beauty
9. Editing
O We used the slow motion effect to suggest
fluidity and emotional fragility. We were
inspired to use slow motion for fluidity from
the ghosts in Overgrown by James Blake, as
well as them looking like they are floating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=AlaRjP8pg0Q (2’19”). We used this slow
motion effect in the string section.

10. Breaking conventions
O We wanted to make our video stand out
from the rest of the singer song-writer
videos with their different genres. So we
decided to use the crop effect to cut to the
beat. This makes the video quite interesting
and different from other videos from this
genre, as they usually follow a much simpler
less noticeable editing technique.

11. Digipack
O We followed the conventions to
a certain extent of a singer
song-writer – our digipack has
some artistic qualities to it, has
the watercolour and it doesn’t
show the whole face of the
artist
O It however is also quite popy, as
it is showing a head shot of the
artist
12. Website
O Carrying through a soft colour scheme which
can help suggest artistry and softeness and
sensitivity
13. Digipack and website
O Both products follow the conventions of a
singer song-writer, as the products are quite
simplistic and minimalist, however effective.
