The migration process from Mainstream and Waterfall approaches to Agile Methodologies, at a broad and full company level, is a complex challenge that requires courage, dedication and ability to face difficulties and errors. This short paper is the real story (hence the sub title: “Enterprise Challenges”) of my long experience as a CTO and Senior Manager, which has been committed and involved into spreading agile methodologies in Italy at Enterprise level (in particular by adopting Agile Modeling, eXtreme Programming, Scrum, Kanban and Lean Development methodologies), thus involving all levels of the company, starting from the organization structure and vision to the strategic operational details (eg: open source tools for project management and full life-cycle).

When Node.js Goes Wrong: Debugging Node in Production The event-oriented approach underlying Node.js enables significant concurrency using a deceptively simple programming model, which has been an important factor in Node's growing popularity for building large scale web services. But what happens when these programs go sideways? Even in the best cases, when such issues are fatal, developers have historically been left with just a stack trace. Subtler issues, including latency spikes (which are just as bad as correctness bugs in the real-time domain where Node is especially popular) and other buggy behavior often leave even fewer clues to aid understanding. In this talk, we will discuss the issues we encountered in debugging Node.js in production, focusing upon the seemingly intractable challenge of extracting runtime state from the black hole that is a modern JIT'd VM. We will describe the tools we've developed for examining this state, which operate on running programs (via DTrace), as well as VM core dumps (via a postmortem debugger). Finally, we will describe several nasty bugs we encountered in our own production environment: we were unable to understand these using existing tools, but we successfully root-caused them using these new found abilities to introspect the JavaScript VM.

There is a lot of reluctance within organisations to place ScrumMasters, let alone to spend money to hire them. Surely this role can be done by one of the developers, right? After all, it’s only a minor role, isn’t it? Far from it! The ScrumMaster is a full-time role. Without it, who can take care of the agile process on behalf of a busy Scrum team? One way to help teams and management understand the value of the ScrumMaster’s role is to show them the volume and importance of tasks a ScrumMaster can fulfil, and the consequences of what happens if nobody takes care of these tasks. This session not only presents the 42 tasks of a ScrumMaster’s role but will clearly show that every Scrum team needs a ScrumMaster.

Identity systems on the Web are a bit of a mess. Surely in 2013, we would have something else than usernames and passwords for logging into websites. A solution that doesn't require trusting a central authority. It turns out that solving the general identity problem is very hard. Some of these solutions require complicated redirections, an overwhelming amount of jargon and lots of verbose XML. The technology has been around for a long time, but implementing it properly (and safely) is often incredibly difficult. This talk will explore the challenges of the existing Web identity solutions and introduce the choices that we made during the development of Persona, a new cross-browser federated identity solution from Mozilla. It will cover: - a discussion of the complexities and privacy-related concerns that existing identity solutions have - how crypto is used in Persona to provide both authentication and privacy - the Persona federation approach: fully distributed with fallbacks - demos and actual code from sites that have implemented Persona - the basics of the Persona API so that attendees can go out and easily support this technology on their own sites Trying to convince users to pick unique (and strong) passwords for each website is a losing battle. What we're proposing is a standard, built into browsers, that leverages the new security features that email providers are now offering. A simple federated solution to eliminate site-specific passwords.

This talk gives you an overview of the latest API additions – such as the Canvas layer, the Places API and real time traffic conditions – and showcase stunning web applications build on top of these libraries. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money.
