Answer
Subtracting Real Numbers
GUIDED EXAMPLE 6 A football team advanced 7 rushing yards on
its first down, but was then pushed back 9 yards on the second down.
Determine the total number of rushing yards gained by the offense
after the second down.
STEP
Write the situation as a subtraction problem.
RESULT
SOLUTION
The team had lost 2 total rushing
yards after the second down.
Leave the first number alone.
Change the minus sign to a plus sign.
Change the sign of the number being subtracted.
Add the two numbers using the rules of addition.
To add a positive and a negative, subtract the
numerical parts and give the answer the sign of
the larger numerical part.
Answer
Study Guide
To add two numbers with the same sign, add the absolute
values, or numerical parts, of the numbers and give the
answer the same sign as the numbers being added.
To add two numbers with different signs, subtract the
absolute values, or numerical parts, of the numbers and
give the answer the same sign as the larger numerical part.
Rule: SUBTRACTION OF REAL NUMBERS
To subtract real numbers, add the opposite of the second number to the
first. We sometimes refer to this as “Leave, Change, Change.”
Procedure: SUBTRACTING REAL NUMBERS
To subtract real numbers, do the following:
1. Leave the first number alone.
2. Change the minus sign to a plus sign.
3. Change the sign of the number being subtracted.
4. Add the two numbers using the rules of addition.
