• Syariah banking in Indonesia
began in 1983 with the release
of Paket Desember 1983
(PAKDES 83)
Regulation that giving credits
without interest ( zero interest )
• 1988 – Minister of Finance
established a set of policies in
Paket Oktober 1988 (PAKTO
88)
Derregulation that gives
convenience to the
establishment of the new banks
• 1991 – First general bank
embodied called Bank
Muamalat Indonesia
Initiative by Majelis Ulama
Indonesia (MUI) and
• In the end of 1990’s – Monetary
crisis occurred
Bank Muamalat is being affected (
the equity only left 1/3 of the initial

• 1999-2002 – IDB gave fund until it
rise up again and make profit
