1. SUBJECT OF THE SENTENCE
- a noun is used as the subject
- what is being talked about
in a sentence
Examples:
 Father works in a farm.
 The lady walks gracefully.
 Miss Cruz goes to school early
2. PREDICATE NOUN
-a noun that is usually after the
linking verb
Examples:
 Mario is a teacher.
 My friend is an architect.
 Rosario was a valedictorian.
 The prince became a beggar.
 The supervisor is Janice.
 They are my friends.
3. DIRECT OBJECT
-a noun that receives the action of the
verb.
Examples:

 The girl lost the bag.
 The robber killed the policeman.
 The boy found a book.
 She likes watermelon.
 Yesterday, we planted rice.
 Jack slammed the door.
4. INDIRECT OBJECT

-a noun that receives the
secondary action of the verb
Examples:
 The secretary gave her boss a gift.
 I bought my grand daughter a new dress.
 The president gave Teresita a letter.
 Lani gave Leolan a new purse.
 The girl wrote her father a letter.
5. OBJECT OF PREPOSITION

-a noun that serves the object of
preposition.(in, on, at, from, etc)
Examples:
 Three students are absent from the class.
 The children played under the tree.
 We stayed in the field.
 The bus came from Pampanga.
 She teaches us about English.
6. AN APPOSITIVE

-a noun renaming or identifying the
person or thing first mentioned
Examples:
 Jose Rizal, the hero, was born in Calamba.
 My friend, an architect, has just arrived.
 We went to Baguio, the summer capital of
the Philippines.
 My brother Michael is six years old.
7. DIRECT ADDRESS
- a name or word used in directly
addressing the person
Examples:
 Paolo, wake up.
 Mr. President, the conference room is now
ready for the meeting.
 The patient needs your immediate response,
doctor.
 The room, Jelaine, has to be cleaned.
8. Object Complement 
•An object complement is a word that
completes the meaning of a direct
object.  It is used when the direct
object would not make complete sense
by itself.
Example:
I named my cat Garfield.
special titles

People often have
that show
respect for who they are or for the work they do.
When a person’s special title is written with their name,
use a capital letter at the beginning of the special title.
Let’s look at some special titles.

Mr. Vance
Dr. Darby
Principal Forgety
Mrs. Ingle

*2. Mahomet was an Arabian.
*3. My friends! alas, I have no friends.
*4. Are you a friend of Caesar?

*6. I, Daniel, saw a vision.
*7. Hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king.
*8. There came to this country a Jewish
banker.

*9. Dr. Green, the physician in the next
street, is a membei of our temperance
society.

*10. Fire! Call the engines.

Uses of nouns

  • 3. Nouns are words that name people, places, things, and animals.

  • 7. This week we are working on being able to find the nouns in sentences. Let’s practice this.
  • 8. Honey bees live in a hive. Which word or words in the sentence are nouns?

  • 10. A woodpecker lives in a tree. Which word or words in the sentence are nouns?

  • 13. 1. SUBJECT OF THE SENTENCE - a noun is used as the subject - what is being talked about in a sentence Examples:  Father works in a farm.  The lady walks gracefully.  Miss Cruz goes to school early
  • 14. 2. PREDICATE NOUN -a noun that is usually after the linking verb Examples:  Mario is a teacher.  My friend is an architect.  Rosario was a valedictorian.  The prince became a beggar.  The supervisor is Janice.  They are my friends.
  • 15. 3. DIRECT OBJECT -a noun that receives the action of the verb. Examples:  The girl lost the bag.  The robber killed the policeman.  The boy found a book.  She likes watermelon.  Yesterday, we planted rice.  Jack slammed the door.
  • 16. 4. INDIRECT OBJECT -a noun that receives the secondary action of the verb Examples:  The secretary gave her boss a gift.  I bought my grand daughter a new dress.  The president gave Teresita a letter.  Lani gave Leolan a new purse.  The girl wrote her father a letter.
  • 17. 5. OBJECT OF PREPOSITION -a noun that serves the object of preposition.(in, on, at, from, etc) Examples:  Three students are absent from the class.  The children played under the tree.  We stayed in the field.  The bus came from Pampanga.  She teaches us about English.
  • 18. 6. AN APPOSITIVE -a noun renaming or identifying the person or thing first mentioned Examples:  Jose Rizal, the hero, was born in Calamba.  My friend, an architect, has just arrived.  We went to Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines.  My brother Michael is six years old.
  • 19. 7. DIRECT ADDRESS - a name or word used in directly addressing the person Examples:  Paolo, wake up.  Mr. President, the conference room is now ready for the meeting.  The patient needs your immediate response, doctor.  The room, Jelaine, has to be cleaned.
  • 20. 8. Object Complement  •An object complement is a word that completes the meaning of a direct object.  It is used when the direct object would not make complete sense by itself. Example: I named my cat Garfield.
  • 21. special titles People often have that show respect for who they are or for the work they do. When a person’s special title is written with their name, use a capital letter at the beginning of the special title. Let’s look at some special titles. Officer Smith Mr. Vance Dr. Darby Principal Forgety Mrs. Ingle
