  4. 4. Figure out what services you want to sell and to who If only I could find a designer who gets me. Really gets me.
  5. 5. Let’s break it down...
  6. 6. You need to start thinking of your website as your virtual pad, your home base, to connect with your dream clients. Setup your website I’m putting the final touches on the website. How’s the vector, Victor?
  7. 7. Setup your online social media presence Your dream clients are gonna Google you, so make sure when they find you make sure it’s awesome. In other words, don’t set up a gazillion social media profiles if you don’t plan to “show up”. Pick one or two to start. The key to social media success is to be helpful and talk to peeps.
  8. 8. Figure out who you want to sell services to You can try to sell to everyone, but you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s a good thing. Focus on people that you REALLY want to work with. I want to work with a designer who specializes in rock star interiors.
  9. 9. Where are you going to find these people you want to work for? We’re always on Design*Sponge looking for ideas for our love nest.
  10. 10. Where you’re going to find these people you want to work for You can’t start making money until you show up and start the conversation with your dream clients where they already are. Joan, see if you can find a designer in this blasted city. There must be at least one.

  12. 12. Figure out what services to sell to them Duh... but really, a lot of interior designers just put up a website and say “call me”. Why would I call you? I want to be sure you know how to solve my problem. Create a service that solves their problem so their more inclined to contact you. Fred, call that designer for me. I’m scared she’s gonna be a man-eater type.

  14. 14. Figure out the best way to deliver those services You need to be prepared for when your clients hire you. They want to know how you’re going to deliver their design. Figure it out so you can tell them up front and quell their fears so their decision to buy is a total no-brainer. Do I download this or are they gonna send me something in the mail?
  15. 15. How much are you going to sell your services for? I’ll take one Mood Board, one Color Palette and heck, throw in a rendering. That’s gonna be one million dollars, please. Cash or credit?
  16. 16. How much to sell your services for Loaded question, huh? If you charge $5 or $500, first decide to always charge a flat fee. Then focus on the value and results you’re bringing it and own it. People will pay whatever you want to charge if you can show them you’re the perfect solution to their problem.
