WELCOME – ALAN BASSETT, CHAIRMAN (COGNITION MEDIA)
Alan welcomed members to our first meeting of 2015
with an excellent attendance. A couple of points where
raised including the Steering Group Resurrection (more
information listed under the AOB section of this
document) together with a safety alert detailing
potentially series incidents regarding a lack of
understanding on the part of standby personnel in
confined space scenarios –

EUGENE LARKIN – POSTURITE
Eugene’s presentation was based on ergonomics; he
demonstrated a number of products including the Penguin
Mouse (useful for preventing/helping repetitive strain, carpel
tunnel and can be used by ambidextrous people), Number Slide
Keyboard, BarMouse, Footrests, Veridesk, Cricket Laptop Stand
and chairs that can accommodate users of various sizes and include seat slides. A full list of

LINDA DONACHIE – HEALTH & SAFETY EXECUTIVE
Our main speaker, Linda provided a presentation
on Safe Systems of Work on Major Hazard Sites.
She covered COMAH & major accident
prevention, Regulation of COMAH Sites and the
role of the contractor in prevention of major
accidents. A number of examples were discussed,
which included Flixborough 1974, Buncefield
2005, Terra Nitrogen 2006 and BP Texas City.
2. LINDA DONACHIE – HEALTH & SAFETY EXECUTIVE (CONT)
Linda also discussed the regulations, including Control of Major Accident Hazard Regulations 1999
(as amended) and the Regulatory Approach, which includes inspection, Safety Report Assessment,
Stakeholder Engagement (leading to advice, enforcement, and prosecution) Illustrations of the
Major Hazard Management Systems, Barriers of PPP (People, Processes & Plant) and the critical
factors which lead to the Deepwater Horizon incident. Linda rounded off her presentation with
conclusions and a list of guideline documents which can be found on the HSE website
(www.hse.gov.uk) Members had the opportunity to ask questions, which included an animated

• Steering Group - Our steering group meetings are held in the months between the main
meetings to plan, develop and determine the direction of the partnership. We are always
on the lookout for dynamic and knowledgeable/experienced members to get involved.

next meeting all being well will be Tuesday 3rd
March.
• Future Meeting Topics - There has been a high interest in the upcoming CDM Regulations
update, this suggestion has been put forward for a future presentation. Please forward any
other recommendations to bianca@neshep.org for consideration.
• Drugs & Alcohol Event - Our member company DATS/Jackson’s Law Firm will be holding an
event on Thursday 5th
March 2015, at the Wilton International Centre. The event will cover
