3. About Smithtown History: Smithtown was first settled in about 1665. A Native American Chief granted Richard Smith all the land that he was able to encircle in one day on his bull. Smith’s bull, Whisper, helped him to gain the land so a statue of him was erected on the Fork of Jericho Turnpike. Present: Today Smithtown is a large town covering about 111.4 square miles and is inhabited by roughly115,715 people. Smithtown’s excellent school district has two high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools.
