3. What is research?
• scholarly or scientific investigation or
inquiry
• to study (something) thoroughly.
• research is a way of finding out
answers to questions.

9. Action Research
• “Action research is a process of systematic reflection,
enquiry and action carried out by individuals about
their own professional practice” (Frost, 2002, p. 25).
• “Educational action research is an enquiry which is
carried out in order to understand, to evaluate and
then to change, in order to improve some educational
practice’ (Bassey, 1998, p. 93).

10. How is AR different from
other research?
Denscombe (1998) suggests four characteristics:
1. its practical nature;
2. its focus on change;
3. the involvement of a cyclical process;
4. its concern with participation.
