How to Manage Your Time Each Day: Essential Time Management Skills

  1. 1. INTRODUCTION 1  Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities throughout your day.  Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time.  This leaves you time for the famous “work-life” balance we hear so much about, but which often seems to elude us 2
  2. 2. 1: PRINCIPLES OF TIME MANAGEMENT  There are only 24 hours in a day  If we set aside 8 hours for sleep, and time for meals and self-care, how much time do we realistically have left to work?  Unless we want to burn out fast or work ourselves into an early grave, we need to prioritize and set goals and deadlines 3
  3. 3. 2: TIME MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS  A lot of people don’t set goals  They sit down to do a task, but often get side- tracked.  Or, the task takes longer than they thought  This means everything else gets pushed back, or put on hold  Time management is about making the most of the time you do have to get the most important things done 4
  4. 4. 3: ADVANTAGES OF THE TIME MANAGEMENT PROCESS  There are many benefits to learning how to manage your time:  Less stress  Getting more done  Not having to work so many hours  Watching your career take off  Pleasing family and friends because you are not spending all your hours working 5
  5. 5. 4: GETTING ORGANIZED  The first aspect of time management is to get more organized  If you find yourself constantly looking for important things or cutting your deadlines close, it’s time to set up some systems and priorities  A to-do list in order of what needs to be done and when can be a good first step 6
  6. 6. 5: TOOLS TO USE FOR TIME MANAGEMENT  There are many tools available, including lots of apps  The best tools, however, are the ones you will actually use, which can often be just a small notebook and pencil to jot it all down, then slot it all into your to-do list and daily calendar  Calendars, planners and digital alarms can all help keep you on track 7
  7. 7. CONCLUSION  Time management can be one of the key differences between great success in your personal and professional lives, and an average existence  All of us need to work to pay the bills, and/or to do something we are passionate about and which is meaningful to others  The secret is to manage your time effectively  Good time management will help you work smarter – not harder – so that you get MORE done in LESS time. 8
