Future Nonprofit Technology is Already Here: How Blockchain and AI Are Creating Impact Right Now. Presented by Amy Neumann, Good Plus Tech, July 17, 2019, at NTEN CLE's Nonprofit Technology event.
You’ve heard all the buzz about blockchain technology and artificial intelligence recently. But do they apply to the nonprofit sector? Do you need to pay attention?
Yes! Both of these technologies are shifting the way impact is created, tracked, and measured for nonprofits and social enterprises alike.
Learn about how both of these tools are creating new opportunities in the impact space, right now:
• Creative ways nonprofits and NGOs are using blockchain and AI today, around the globe - and in Cleveland
• Trends to follow and questions to ask to understand when and if your nonprofit should take action
• How these technologies can (and already do) play a role helping to create and track impact for nonprofits

What is blockchain?
What is AI/Artificial
Intelligence?
Will blockchain and/or AI
impact my organization?
What are examples of
how blockchain is being
used for Good?
How is AI being used for
Good?
What can I learn and do
right now for my
organization?

Why all the sudden global interest?
• Blockchain and AI have made massive strides into our daily lives.
• Whether we recognize them by their names or not, devices and
systems are being used by us daily that involve both technologies.
• And, the rate of creation for new ways to use both is escalating
rapidly – including for positive social impact!

What Is Blockchain?
The internet we have
today is the internet of
information.
It’s about being able to
give or receive any
information you want to
create, find, or send to
someone, and easily
sharing or receiving that
information instantly.
That’s today’s internet.
Blockchain – the next
internet - is the internet
of value. The internet of
value exchange.
It’s about anything you
want to give or receive
that can only have one
owner at one time
(money, identity,
intellectual/artistic
rights, land or property
titles and deeds, degrees
or certifications), and
easily exchanging value,
rights, or authentication
related to those things
instantly.
Blockchain is a
permanent (immutable),
time-stamped record
(database, or ledger) of
who owns what at any
given time, agreed to by
everyone participating,
that cannot be changed
or tampered with, due to
the computer code
behind blockchain
technology.

What Is Blockchain? A Short Summary
• No one entity owns a public blockchain. It is a shared, peer-
to-peer network.
• Everyone using it agrees that the credibility and trust is
created within the blockchain technology itself.
• Therefore, it eliminates the need for third-party services to
establish trust (like banks).
• Parties can confidently exchange money, goods, services, or
authentication of identity or credentials, without third-party
intermediaries.

What Is AI (Artificial Intelligence)?
The definition of artificial
intelligence from Science
Daily is:
“The study and design of
‘intelligent agents’
where an intelligent
agent is a system that
perceives its
environment and takes
actions which maximizes
its chances of success.”
AI systems rely on
humans initially to input
the training information
that they then use to
start “machine learning.”
This means, humans
provide sets of training
data and see how well
computers some up with
solutions that make
sense to humans.
At some point, the AI can
start to make
assumptions and
correlations on its own,
based on instructions
from humans.
There is already a lot of
bias built into AI because
a homogeneous set of
humans are providing a
homogeneous set of
initial training data for
many AI programs.
(There’s still time to
fix/change this, but be
mindful about
accidentally “coding out”
large swathes of people
because AI is blind to
them.)

The Future of AI? The Stories You Will Hear

What Can AI Do?
The main aim of any
technology – including
AI – is simply to help do
something:
• Better
• Faster
• Easier
• Or that couldn’t be
done before.
17. 17
Will blockchain and/or AI impact my organization?
• Both technologies will impact, and are already
impacting, most types of systems and organizations.
• Some impact will be more immediate, and some more in
the future. Even now, however, there are many current
social good projects that are hopeful and exciting for
nonprofits, that we can garner ideas form for our
organizations. The more you learn now, the more seeds
will be planted for later!
• Being mindful of equity, inclusion, and preventing
human bias are all critical to design and implementation
of both blockchain and AI solutions.

Can Technology Help Achieve Your Goals?
AI:
• Multiple parties generate
transactions that change
information
• in a shared repository
• Parties need to trust that
transactions are valid
• Intermediaries are
inefficient/not trusted
• Enhanced security is
needed
Blockchain:
• Cost savings by
automating specific
processes
• Improved decision
making
• Improved client
interactions
• Data mining and
analysis
• Reducing human bias (if
created without bias)
