They may have used a mixture to create impact and make it look dramatic. The majority of the copy is in capitals, this is like it is shouting at you, as it is a rock genre magazine they may want to create his impression to make you buy it.1498600219710
As well as copy, images have been used to show the audience what is in the magazine. Small images of various artists are positioned on the cover to tell the audience they are included, this may make them more inclined to buy the magazine.
When you first look at this magazine it looks very dramatic with bold images and colours. The colour scheme used here is white, black and red. They are quite harsh colours creating an intense feel. The background is pale grey so it doesn’t distract the audience from the other parts on the cover.
Some cell lines are used here to give the audience an insight into what is in the magazine. They are in red and white alternating on each article this separates them and makes them stand out.‘PLUS’ has been used to draw the audience to this section, otherwise they may not be drawn to it.
Some pull quotes have been used on the front cover to try and make the audience want to buy the magazine.
The barcode is positioned in the bottom corner of the magazine because you don’t want the audience drawn to it. The price is shown here too.
This contents page from ‘Karrang’ is a lot different from the front cover of the magazine. The front cover was dramatic and bold while the contents page looks a little more relaxed. The colour scheme used on the contents page is basic, white, black and yellow. The contrast of the yellow text on the black boxes makes it stand out attracting the audience.
Here a little note has been left for the reader to read. It makes them feel more involved. It is positioned at the top so the audience see it.
The title is positioned at the top of the page. It is on top of a black box to make it stand out. The typeface its self is bold and in a sans serif style so it looks less formal ideal for the young adult audience.1068705114935
A CU shot of a man taking up a large part of the contents page. Our attention is focused on him. He is not looking at the camera and his facial expressions make him look a little venerable.
A pull quote has been used at the top of the page so the audience see it and what to read the article.
The contents itself it a typical convention by the way it is divided up my sub headings to make it easier for the audience to find a certain page. The numbers are in a larger copy to make them stand out. The subheadings are in the black box to draw attention to them.As well as text to tell the audience where articles are, images are used to make it more interesting and draw attention to it.
Heading: In a bold and large typeface. It is in two colours to make it stand out. Sans serif style has been used so it doesn’t look formal. It is in capitals to make it look dramatic.
Information down the side catches the audience’s attention as the white stands out from the black.
The overall look of this double page is quite dramatic matching the front cover. There isn’t not columns of copy which is good because some teenagers don’t want to read two pages of copy.
Makes it sound really good so people will read it.106680036195
Four images have been used at the bottom of the page, it makes the article look more interesting. The main image takes up the whole of the two pages. It is a MLS so we can see the background of the drummer ect. The main person is not looking at the camera he looks like he is in a natural position from singing. Because the image is so big it will draw audiences to it.
Mast head ‘SPIN’ is the title of the magazine, it is positioned the corner of the cover in a bright red rectangle, drawing attention to it. The iconic typeface of sans serif and large copy is consistently used in the magazine institution and it’s renowned for this.
Cover line – ‘Lily Allen’ is in a bold and large typeface. This draws our attention to it. When audiences see that an article is about her they may be more inclined to buy it.
The colour scheme is black and white. The background looks like a form of wallpaper. It looks like it is slightly angled giving a feel of disorientation.
The copy throughout the cover is in white and black. They are a contrast from each other making them stand out. It is all in a sans serif style making it less formal ideal for the young adult audience. Various sizes have been used to make certain parts stand out.1327150176530
Pull quotes have been used on some of the cell lines, this makes it interesting for the audience making them want to buy the magazine to read the full story.
Cell lines – alternating in black and white, they tell the audience what is in the magazine.
Lighting is on Lily Allen as you can see the shadow, it makes her the main focus, drawing us to her.
MLS of the artist ‘Lily Allen’ she is positioned exactly in the centre of the cover drawing attention to her. She is the USP.Her pose and facial expressions are quite seductive appealing to the young adult male audience. She is looking straight at the audience drawing them in.
Cell lines – say artists names, this will attract readers to the magazine because if they see their favourite artists name they may want to buy the magazine to read about them.
A pull quote has been used in the top corner. This draws the audience in making them want to read her article. The iconic logo of ‘SPIN’ is used in the same position as the front cover to keep with the house style.
The layout of this contents page is quite simple. It consists of only a few things (main image, logo, contents and some copy). A MS of Duffy is positioned in the centre of the contents page, this draws attention to you. She is looking straight at the camera so it is direct address. She draws the audience in. She looks quite natural because she is not posing. Her facial expressions look quite playful. The lighting is shining straight onto her as you can see the shadow behind. This makes her the main focus of the page. She is holding a pink guitar as it she’s about to hit the camera in a playful way.
129540040005
All the copy used here is in a sans serif style to make it look less formal, ideal for the young adult audience.
‘on the cover’ is in a blue box to draw attention to it. It states some information about the images.
The contents itself is very simple. Sub headings are used to split up the contents so the audience can easily find a certain page. They are in bold so the audience can differentiate between that and the copy underneath. The ‘features’ heading is in a different typeface (bold, bigger and in capitals) this is so it catches the audience’s attention. The colour scheme is simple, dark blue and black. The background is natural, a pale grey wall. This is so it doesn’t distract our attention from the other aspects on the page.
This is a MS of the artist J.Cole. It looks like a natural shot because he is looking away. It is a pull focus shot. He is positioned in the middle of the page so he is the first thing you see.
Looks like a sticker drawing attention to it. It is a promotional aspect about this CD.The layout of this double page spread is simple, it’s not overcrowded and it’s well-spaced out.The colour scheme is simply black and white keeping it simplistic.
121920361315
The title is his name in bold and large typeface. If people are flicking through and see his name they may read the article. The copy underneath is slightly smaller but still stands out, the audience see the name ‘Jay-Z’ who is well known and may be more inclined to read the magazine. The copy is all in serif style, it makes it look sophisticated going with the simplistic look. The columns of copy are split up my sub headings in a bold typeface so you can identify them.
Questionnaire:
,[object Object]

2611755125730In order to find out exactly what kind of music I should include in my magazine I asked this question. As you can see 9 people chose ‘mixture’ this means a variety of music. Only two people chose R&B. I will apply this to my magazine to try and attract a mass target audience.
2847340-13970Here I asked my target audience what they would like to see in a music magazine. As you can see Interviews, Top 40 UK, Reviews and celeb gossip were the most popular. I now have a good insight into what my target audience like, this will hopefully make my magazine more successful.
Because of these results I will try and apply it to my own magazine when I have to create a double page spread.
284988091440I wanted to see what magazines my target audience preferred. From there I can look at the styles and layout they use and try to apply it to my own. As you can see my sample chose Billboard as their favourite magazine. From here I will look at Billboard’s magazines and try to use their style.
227965093980I wanted to find what would attract my target audience to my magazine. Therefore I asked my sample what would attract them to a magazine. As you can see no one voted for lots of text because it’s quite off putting. You can clearly see that the most popular choice was ‘a couple of images and some text’ followed by ‘a cover with lots of images to tell you what’s inside. I can now apply this to my own magazineFind my tribe
The most popular ‘tribes’ and townies, indie scenesters and rahs. 945515-6350
Here I have selected the South East of England.
The three most popular ‘tribes’ are Indie scenesters, Townies and scene kids.
839470152400
Here I have selected the East of EnglandKey of all the ‘tribes’ in the UK
When completing the ‘Find my tribe’ questionnaire I found that a variety of questions were asked. As you can see different areas across the UK has different interests and beliefs from other areas. This is why you can the different results in tribes. Here the South and South East have different popular ‘tribes’.
Front cover reflectionFor part of my research I had to complete an analysis of 10 magazine covers ranging from a variety of music genres. The magazine covers I analysed were; Billboard, Vibe, Q, NME, Kerrang, Rock Sound, Spin, Rolling Stone, XXL and Blender. From the analysis I found a lot of useful information such as the typical conventions magazine companies uses to attract target audiences. This includes slogans, mast heading, sky lines, cell lines, a main image etc. I found that all the mast headings were in the largest copy. This is so the audience are drawn to it. The name of the magazine is important because it may be the unique selling point so needs to be seen. All the magazines I analysed had a very large image as the main focus. They were all images of famous artists, I learnt that by using famous artists on the front cover it draws more audiences to your magazine. This is because if people glance at your magazine and see a well-known artist they like, they will most probably look at the magazine further. I could apply this to my own magazine I am going to make because by having a USP (in this case the famous artist) it will attract more audiences. Another aspect I learnt is where to position the barcode, every magazine I analysed had a small barcode positioned at the bottom of the page. Another aspect I learnt was to use ‘buzz’ words on my cover. Buzz words are words that draw the audience in, for example ‘exclusive’. From the magazines I analysed I found only a few used the buzz line ‘exclusive’. When I was looking at the magazines I found that I was drawn to these words, therefore I will defiantly use a buzz word in my magazine cover.Another aspect is cell lines, from the magazines I analysed I found the cell lines that were in a bold copy were more effective catching our attention. I think by having too many cell lines can be off putting from some magazines I looked at. (like the ‘Rock Sound magazine). Therefore in my magazine I will use a few bold cell lines. Finally I learnt that the house style is very important. From magazines I analysed I found that the magazines that kept to a few colours were more effective in drawing the audience in. Some of the magazines I looked at had no house style it was a mash of colours that didn’t look attractive. For my magazine I will keep to one house style of about 3 colours.I also learnt the important of copy. The most effective magazines I looked at were the ones that kept to one font. It kept it all consistent and looked attractive. The magazines I analysed that had different fonts looked quite off putting.
Contents page analysisFrom analysing 10 contents pages I found what makes a good contents page. The contents page is a very important aspect in the magazine as it navigates the reader around the magazine. One aspect I found that makes a good contents page is how the actual contents is split up. For example, ‘NME’ ‘Rolling Stone’ and ‘Billboard’ all have good contents because they have split it up into sections such as ‘reviews’ ‘gossip’ features’. This is very effective because it allows the reader to easily find a specific page. The magazines ‘Spin’ and ‘Rock Sound’ did not do this well as they had not sectioning, this made it difficult to find a certain page as you have to read every single line.I will apply the sectioning to my magazine contents page because it is a very efficient way for the reader to find a page.Another aspect I found was that the better contents pages were the ones that positioned everything around a main image. For example, ‘Karrang’ had a main image and three graphic features, everything was fitted around them so nothing overlapped. I found this good because it didn’t look overcrowded and it looked organised. ‘Rock Sound’ had a main image as the background and positioned the contents over the image, it made it difficult to read the words and did not look attractive. The images are very important because it will draw the audience in, I will apply the positioning everything around a main image to my own magazine because I feel it will be more appealing.Another aspect I found was the use of graphic features, by this I mean small images that symbolise an article in the magazine. I found that these were quite effective because it was an attractive way to show what is in the magazine an alternative to lots of copy. I think young adults will enjoy seeing more images as it looks more interesting. The magazines I analysed that made good use of this was ‘Rolling Stone’ and ‘Kerrang’. I will defiantly be using this aspect in my own magazine. From the magazines I analysed I found the importance of copy. Most of the content page’s I analysed had subheadings in the contents, these were usually in a bold typeface, then underneath was normal copy. I will use this idea in my own magazine because it clearly separates everything. Also the reader is automatically drawn to the bold copy, if the who contents was in normal copy it would not attract attention while the bold will.
Overall I found the most effective contents pages were the ones that were clearly set out, ones that were not over crowded with images and copy and the ones that sectioned the actual contents up. I think this because it makes it look more visually appealing. Content pages that are overwhelmed with images and copy are off putting, this is not what I want my magazine to do, therefore I will use the aspects I picked out to try and make my contents the best it can be.
Double page spread relection
From analysing 10 double page spreads I now have a good idea of what makes a good double page spread. In my magazine I will include one double page spread about a music topic for my audience to read.
One aspect I learnt from analysing double page spreads is the use of pull quotes. I found these were very effective because once you read them you want to read the whole article. The copy these pull quotes were in were usually a bigger typeface to attract attention to it. Most of the pull quotes I saw were also in a different font, again attracting attention.
When analysing the articles I found the most appealing ones were the ones that had a main image. For example, NME and XXL had a main image that took up a whole page, I think this was good because it looks more interesting and attracts the reader. I also like the double page spreads that had little images at the side that refer to parts in the article. It makes it look much more interesting something young adults like to see. Billboard had an image that took up the top width of the page I found this was quite effective because it stands out. I will defiantly apply this to my own double page spread because it is an effective way to use images making the overall look more interesting.
One major thing I learnt from analysing double page spreads is the importance of copy. For example, Billboard’s double page spread is basically all text and an image. When you first look at it is quite overwhelming. The volume of copy is quite off putting. However NME and blender have balanced the two images with some copy. It looks attractive and doesn’t put the reader off reading it. I will try and include this in my magazine because I want to get the balance of copy and images so my audience is drawn to the article and not put off.
I found by analysing the double spread page ‘Karrang’ that using a background image can sometimes be a bad thing. In this article the image is quite busy, I found when I tried to read the article the image was distracting me from reading it. The image continued behind the text and mad is difficult to read. However Rolling Stone made good use of an image for the background, they positioned everything around it so the reader wasn’t distracted. I will try and apply this to my own magazine.
Audience reflection.
From carrying out a questionnaire that I gave to my target audience I was able to see what they would like to see in a magazine. I found what would attract them to a magazine, they voted lots of images and an equal amount of copy and images. Therefore I will try and incorporate this into my own magazine front cover.I learnt from the questionnaire the average price that my target audience are prepared to pay for a magazine is £2-£3. This could be because students have part time jobs which do not pay a lot of money. This means students don’t want to pay over £5 for a magazine. Taking this into consideration I will definitely price my magazine between £2 and £3. I learnt from the questionnaire what my target audience want to see in a music magazine. This included aspects such as ‘UK top 40, Interviews, reviews and posters’. I found that UK top 40, Interviews and reviews were the most popular. This will make my magazine more appealing to my target audience. I will therefore apply the results to my magazine. From my questionnaire I found that my target audience usually or would like to buy a magazine monthly. From this result I will base my magazine on a monthly basis.I also learnt that my target audience would rather see a mixture of music genres in the magazine and not focus on a specific genre. I will apply this to my magazine because it will attract a mass audience. If I focussed my magazine on one genre I would be narrowing my audience to a limited number.
From the ‘Find my tribe’ analysis I found that different areas in the UK have different interests, this means different audiences for media products. From the results from ‘find my tribe’ I found that the south east and eastern England had different tribes. This may result in different interests in music magazines. Because of this I will try and cater for most of these tribes and interests to attract a mass audience.
From the ‘UP BEAT’ reader profile I created a page with images of all the objects my target audience want/like/have. These objects will help me decide on what adverts I will include in my magazine. It also allows me to get to know my target audience and find out what they like.
Magazine Institutions
19685271145
EMAP is a British media company specialising in business to business multiplatform’s.
