In August 2015, my business/life partner and I both wanted to attend a national software development conference. The only catch? I had a ten week old baby at home. We used Agile software development practices to help us decide what to do and learned some interesting things during our experience.

Contrary to what we may want to believe, emerging research indicates that use of digital tools and content within learning is not gender-blind. While girls and boys share a common interest in technology to support personalized learning, their uses of and aspirations for digital learning are often quite different. This is especially true with game-based learning. In this workshop, we will roll up our sleeves and interact with a variety of games that are popular in education. Using a new evaluation tool, participants will gain an insider perspective on gender-bias or sensitivity within games by examining the characterization, imagery and language, storyline and results of the game play.

The Reproductive Health Bills, popularly known as the RH Bills, are legislative bills aiming to guarantee universal access to reproductive health care services, supplies and information in the Philippines. There are presently six bills with the same goals, the most prominent of which is House Bill 96 but they are all referred to in the country as "the RH Bill" as they have the common purpose of promoting reproductive health, responsible parenthood and informed choice in conformity with internationally recognized human rights standards. The contentious aspect of the bill which has spawned a national debate is its key proposal that the government funds and undertakes widespread distribution of family planning devices such as oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and IUDs, dissemination of information on their use, and enforcement of their provision in all health care centers and private companies, as a way of controlling the population of the Philippines. The bill is based on the premise that present population growth impedes economic development and exacerbates poverty.

There’s heaps of fascinating research about the many behavioral biases we are all subject to as individuals. These include remarkable optical distortions and the way we miss the obvious when we are concentrating on something else. We have a tendency to overestimate ourselves - most famously 90% of drivers assess themselves as above average in ability. We have an attachment to what we already own - how come we won’t buy concert tickets from scalpers at an inflated price, and simultaneously won’t sell tickets we own at face value? We also tend to overweigh risks, even against the chance of regret rather than actual loss. It’s no surprise then that group decisions are even more flawed. So how can we overcome biased decision making? Here are some biases that we often see, followed by some techniques we use to overcome them. We have found that by applying these techniques companies can make better decisions, which in turn increases their resource reallocation and creates more profitable growth.

Legacy code is notoriously difficult to produce an accurate estimate. Why is that? In this talk, we’ll explore the difference between complicated projects, which are easy to replicate and estimate, and complex projects, which are near impossible to predict due to the number of interdependencies in the system.
