My name’s Paul. I live with my mum and dad in a village near Oxford. My dad is
a shop assistant and my mum is a nurse. Mum works in a big hospital in
Oxford. She goes to work at nine o’clock in the evening and she works for ten
hours every night. Mum didn’t use to work at nights, but she really likes it now.
She works long hours, but she isn’t always busy.
When Mum gets home in the morning, we all have breakfast together. Then I go
to school, Dad goes to work and Mum goes to bed. She sleeps for about six
hours. Then she gets up when I come home from school. We talk and watch TV,
and then I start my homework. Yesterday, I didn’t have any homework, so we
played a board game. Dad came home from work at half past six and we all had
dinner together. We usually eat at about half past seven. Mum is often tired,
but she’s always cheerful.
After dinner, Mum watches TV and reads magazines. Then she gets ready for
work again. I wish she could stay at home in the evenings. I’m looking forward
to the weekend because Mum doesn’t work at weekends.

Most modern computers have a DVD-drive.
You can use this machine to listen to
music CDs and to watch your favourite
films. You can also use it to read CD-ROMs.
CD-ROMs hold the same information as
thousands of pages of a book. Why will
people buy books from bookshops if they
can read them on their computer screen?
Why will they borrow books from
libraries? Research recently showed that
books and newspapers are still very
popular. Computers are expensive, but
books and newspapers cost very little. But
the big advantage is that you can pick up a
book quickly and easily and then put it
down again. You don’t have to worry about
opening programs or saving data.
Most experts say that books will continue
to exist, but that we will use them in a
different way. People didn’t stop writing
letters after the invention of the telephone
in 1876. Firstly, not everyone had a
telephone. But, more importantly, people
started sending letters for different
purposes. Today, people don’t write
personal letters. They use their mobile
phones and e-mail instead. Similarly,
before the invention of the camera, we
used paintings to record how people
looked. Today, we use cameras to do this,
but it doesn’t mean that there are no new
paintings and painters.

Jamie Sullivan, the famous
travel writer, describes two
places he has visited.
Mount Everest is in the Himalayas, and it’s part of
the world’s highest mountain range. I’ve seen
Mount Everest, but I haven’t climbed it. I Three
years ago, I went trekking in Nepal and we went to
Everest Base Camp. It was great to see the highest
mountain in the world, but I didn’t like Base Camp
very much. People camp there in tents before and
after they climb the mountain. There was rubbish
everywhere. The camp wasn’t eco-friendly at all.
The people in Nepal were very friendly and I’d like
to go back there. But I don’t want to climb Mount
Everest. I don’t like heights!
New Zealand is one of my favourite countries, and
Kaikoura is my favourite place there. Kaikoura is a
small town on the coast of the South Island. You
can go whale-watching from Kaikoura. You can
also go swimming with dolphins. I’m an
experienced diver and when I went diving, I took
some wonderful underwater photos. The bird life is
fantastic, too. We went on a boat trip and threw
food into the water for the birds. Hundreds of huge
seabirds suddenly appeared. It was amazing.

false (✓)? Correct the false sentences.

The Camel
What is special about the camel?
Well, first of all, camels have
humps. Some of them have one
hump and some have two. The
Arabian one-humped camel came
originally from the Middle East;
the two-humped Bactrian camel
was originally from the dry parts
of Asia. Camels are the largest
animals in the desert. Camels are
common in zoos around the
world, but today they’re rare in
the wild. They are between 2.25
and 3.45 metres long, and they
are up to 2.1 metres tall. Arabian
camels have longer legs, but they
aren’t as heavy as Bactrian
camels.

Camels have got thick fur. This
protects them against the hot
days and cold nights of the
desert. Their huge feet, with only
two toes, are ideal for walking on
sand, and they can close their
noses when they are in a
sandstorm.
There isn’t a lot of water in the
desert, so how do camels
survive? Camels have a solution
for this problem. They don’t need
to drink for long periods of time
because they can store water in
their humps. They just drink a lot
before a long journey! In fact,
camels can drink more than 50
litres of water in a short time.
They store this water, and their
food, in their humps.

Flying for Southern Air
Craig Brown is one of Britain’s busiest
helicopter pilots. Five years ago, Craig started
working for Southern Air. Southern Air hires
out helicopters, gives flying lessons and runs
and helicopter taxi service.
Craig started in the company office. Then he
took flying lessons. After three years, he got
his instructor’s licence. Craig loves training
people to fly helicopters. ‘When someone flies
solo for the first time, it’s fantastic,’ he says.
‘Some people are nervous about helicopters,
but cars are much more dangerous. More
people die in their cars than in helicopters. And
if your engine fails, you can land anywhere you

When cars crash, they can fly to the accident.
They can also help when the police are chasing
criminals. Helicopters can follow fast cars

send information to the police.
Why does Craig like his job? ‘It’s very varied.

Record Breaker
In February 2005, Ellen MacArthur made
history when she arrived back in Britain after
sailing round the world. She completed her
journey of nearly 40,000 kilometres in 71 days
14 hours 18 minutes and 33 seconds. When she
returned to Britain, Helen was a hero! She was
exhausted, but very happy.
Ellen didn’t grow up near the sea. She was born
in a town in central England in 1977. When she
was eight years old, her aunt took her sailing at
the seaside. She has been in love with boats
since then. Ellen wasn’t from a rich family, so
she saved up her school dinner money for three
years and in 1990 she bought her first boat.
When she was eighteen, she sailed around the
UK, and she was named British Yachtsman of
the Year. In 1999 she won the Route du Rhum
race across the Atlantic Ocean. She slept, on
average, 4.2 hours every night and was
exhausted when she finished the race. Ellen
first became famous when she took part in a
round-the-world race in 2001 and came second.
She took part in the same race two years later,
but an accident on the boat

You can use this machine to listen to music CDs and to watch your favourite films. You can also use it to read CD-ROMs. CD-ROMs hold the same information as thousands of pages of a book. Why will people buy books from bookshops if they can read them on their computer screen? Why will they borrow books from libraries? Research recently showed that books and newspapers are still very popular. Computers are expensive, but books and newspapers cost very little. But the big advantage is that you can pick up a book quickly and easily and then put it down again. You don’t have to worry about opening programs or saving data. Most experts say that books will continue to exist, but that we will use them in a different way. People didn’t stop writing letters after the invention of the telephone in 1876. Firstly, not everyone had a telephone. But, more importantly, people started sending letters for different purposes. Today, people don’t write personal letters. They use their mobile phones and e-mail instead. Similarly, before the invention of the camera, we used paintings to record how people looked. Today, we use cameras to do this, but it doesn’t mean that there are no new paintings and painters.

  • 20. Reading The Camel What is special about the camel? Well, first of all, camels have humps. Some of them have one hump and some have two. The Arabian one-humped camel came originally from the Middle East; the two-humped Bactrian camel was originally from the dry parts of Asia. Camels are the largest animals in the desert. Camels are common in zoos around the world, but today they’re rare in the wild. They are between 2.25 and 3.45 metres long, and they are up to 2.1 metres tall. Arabian camels have longer legs, but they aren’t as heavy as Bactrian camels. VOCABULARY / 40 GRAMMAR / 40 READING / 20 TOTAL / 100 32 Uni t 7 -8 Progress tes t Camels have got thick fur. This protects them against the hot days and cold nights of the desert. Their huge feet, with only two toes, are ideal for walking on sand, and they can close their noses when they are in a sandstorm. There isn’t a lot of water in the desert, so how do camels survive? Camels have a solution for this problem. They don’t need to drink for long periods of time because they can store water in their humps. They just drink a lot before a long journey! In fact, camels can drink more than 50 litres of water in a short time. They store this water, and their food, in their humps. ➒ Read the text and choose the correct answer. 1 Camels have got: a one hump. b two humps. c either one or two humps. 2 There aren’t many camels: a in the desert. b in the wild. c in zoos. 3 Arabian camels are: a heavier than Bactrian camels. b taller than Bactrian camels. c longer than Bactrian camels. 4 Camels have got: a two toes. b very big feet. c short legs. 5 Deserts are: a very hot and dry places. b ideal for walking. c always warm at night. 6 Camels can travel long distances: a before they need to drink. b because they’ve got big feet. c in a short time. 2 MARKS FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER TOTAL / 12 ➓ Complete these sentences with words from the text. 1 A Zebra’s is black and white. 2 The dog was as big as a horse.
