Asperger Syndrome is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) discovered and studied for the Dr. Hans Asperger. ________________________________________ It’s a developmental disorder that shows behaviors and difficulties with social and communication skills in boys who had normal intelligence and language development.

Characteristics Positive Characteristics ➢ Looks like any other children. ➢ Usually smart. ➢ Has no speech problems. ➢ Likes to focus in one specific topic, and learn about it. ➢ They are really honest and doesn't have an evil side inside of them. Negative Characteristics ➢ Doesn’t know how to behave in different situations. ➢ Limited social skills. ➢ Repeat unusual movements. ➢ Avoid eye contact. ➢ Hard to understand somebody else feelings. ➢ Hard to express with facial expressions or gestures.

  5. 5. Causes Doctors still don’t know what causes a kid to have the Asperger’s syndrome, but is believed that it might have something to go with an abnormal migration of embryonic cells during the fetal development.
  6. 6. How to identify an asperger? Does the person has an especial interest with something? Does he speak in a monotone way? Does he have a good memory with dates or tiny details? Does the person is making some weird movements? Does he follows strict routines? _____________________________________________ Medical Professionals will make an assessment of the kid/adult to make a diagnosis. An early diagnosis is important to help the individual to have a successful life and to live by themselves.
  7. 7. Treatments Home treatment: ● Provide a supporting and loving home environment. Psychological/Psychiatric Treatment: ● Psychotherapy to teach social skills and how to deal with the emotions surrounding the disorder. ● Parent education and training ● In case that the individual is dealing with anxiety, depression, anger problems, the psychiatrist will determine which medications will have to take. (methamphetamine, clomipramine, nadolol, fluoxetine,etc)
  8. 8. Statistics ➢ More likely to occur in boys than in girls. ➢ 70,000 individuals in Ontario with an ASD. ➢ 1 in 165 individuals in Canada have some form of an ASD. ➢ 1 in 110 children in the United States. ➢ 1 in 500 individuals have Asperger. (Worldwide)
