2. BIOGRAPHY
Sir Francis Drake, the eldest son of a farmer and preacher, born
near Tavistock, Devonshire, England sometime between 1540
and 1543 .
He was a British explorer, slave- trader, privateer and naval
officer.
He was the first Englishman to sail around the world.
He was famously linked with “The Golden Hind” and defeating
the Spanish Armada.
Married Mary Newman in 1569 who died 12 years later.
Then in 1585, he married Elizabeth Sydenham.
He had no children with either of his wives.
Died of dysentery on January 1596.
3. 1577- Sir Francis Drake set out with 5 ships on a nearly 3 year journey that would
take him around the world.
1578 - Francis Drake passes through the Strait of Magellan.
1578 – He renamed his flagship, the Pelican to the Golden Hind.
1579 – Lands on the coast of California.
1580 - Returned to England at the end of his voyage to circumvent the globe.
1581 – Knighted as Sir Francis Drake on board the Golden Hind by Queen Elizabeth
1585 – Sailed through the Virgin Islands to plunder Spanish ships.
1588 - The Spanish Armada was destroyed. It was shattered around the coasts of the
English Isles by an English fleet under the command of Lord Howard of Effingham
with the help of Sir Francis Drake.
1595 – Queen Elizabeth sent Sir Francis Drake to capture treasure from a wrecked
Spanish galleon. Drake failed and returned to Panama.
1596 – Sir Francis Drake died off the coast of Panama of fever and was burried at sea.

America.
• His hatred towards Spanish people (when he
was 23 Spanish trapped the ship he was in)
and to explore possibilities of trade motivated
Sir Francis Drake to explore around the world.
• Returned from his voyage with his ship packed
full of spices, Spanish silver and treasures.

To Me,
• Sir Francis Drake was a great privateer and a
real hero.
• He was a brave navigator.
• He was an adventurous trader. He sailed
around the world.
• He was a dedicated English politician. He
brought back goods to improve the lives of
people living in England.
