Career strategy

  1. 1.  Helps in identifying the strengths & weaknesses of an individual. Helps to utilize strengths & overcome weaknesses in order to take advantage of career opportunities. The process of career strategy is conceptually similar to that of an organizational strategy.
  2. 2.  Helps in determining the direction of the professional career, by answering the some of the questions, that arise within the managers.Such as, Am I an introvert or an extrovert ? What are my attitudes toward time, achievement, work, material things & change?
  3. 3.  In real life, people often resist career planning because it involves making decisions. Likewise managers also resist goal setting because of the uncertainities in the environment. They also possess the fear of failing to achieve goals.
  4. 4.  Identification of career goals: -Goal setting is a continuous process that is flexible, & can be revised according to the changing circumstances. Integration of long-term aims with the more immediate requirement of action.
  5. 5.  Planning in advance. - The time frame for career planning will differ with the circumstances.
  6. 6.  Factors required to be taken into account, - economic - social - political - technological - demographic
  7. 7.  Working in an expanding company provides more career opportunities than working in a company that is not expected to grow. Successful career planning requires a systematic scanning of the environment for opportunities & threats, this can be done with the help of forecasting.
  8. 8.  The environmental opportunities & threats must be matched with the strengths & weaknesses of individuals for the successful career planning.
  9. 9.  Technical Skills- Supervisory level Conceptual / design Skills- Top managers Human Skills- All levels
  10. 10.  Helps in building up of one’s strengths in order to take advantage of opportunities. That is, it helps to overcome the weakness & develop the skills to take advantage of opportunities. It also helps in recognising the threats in the environment & develop a strategy to cope with them.
  11. 11.  It is a logical & systematic analysis of the career planning process that involves personal preferences, ambitions & values. Alternative choices must be chosen rationally because some alternatives may involve high risks, others low risks.
  12. 12.  Some choices demand action now and others can wait. This choosing up of alternatives gains importance because, the careers that were popular in the past may have an uncertain future.
  13. 13.  The long-term strategic career plan needs to be supported by short-term objectives & action plans. Eg: The aim of achieving an M.B.A degree requires the completion of the short-term objective such as number of courses.
  14. 14.  Contigency plans are required for the development of career plans in an environment of uncertainity. These plans should be prepared based on the alternative assumptions.
  15. 15.  It deals with the person’s growth & development in career planning. Career goals & personal ambitions can be considered in selecting & promoting & in designing, training & development programs.
  16. 16.  It helps in evaluating the progress toward career goals & making necessary corrections in the aims or plans. The progress should be monitored even during the completion of an important task or project.
