As a teenager Ann hated her typing class. Little did she know that her prophetic pursuit of her MFA in painting and computer graphics would prepare her for a life of typing and swiping (and much more). Ann will look at the dual nature of computing, the challenges it poses to education, and what’s she learned creating ground breaking degree programs that merge art and technology. She’ll take a deep dive into her current thinking on how we can take on the future creating both gritty individuals and innovative communities through “Connected Learning”, a collaborative model between education and organizations utilizing technology, creating, and relationships.

The principle of Yin and Yang is that all things exist as
inseparable and contradictory opposites….
The two opposites of Yin and Yang attract and complement each
other and….each side has at its core an element of the other.
Neither pole is superior to the other and, as an increase in one
brings a corresponding decrease in the other, a correct balance
between the two poles must be reached in order to achieve
harmony.

most likely to increase in demand by 2030 including
teachers, animal care workers, personal appearance
workers, social scientists, counselors and social

All of these fields require skills that cannot be replaced,

human skills… because if there’s one thing machines
don’t do well, it’s being human. Johnson says working in
fields requiring these human skills is the best way to
protect one’s career from automation.”

46. G E N Z Educational Affordances
“Every recitation in every subject gives an opportunity for
establishing cross-connections between the subject matter of
the lesson and the wider and more direct experiences of
everyday life. …Save by accident, out-of-school experience is left
in its crude and comparatively irreflective [sic] state. It is not subject
to the refining and expanding influences of the more accurate and
comprehensive material of direct instruction. The latter is not
motivated and impregnated with a sense of reality by being
intermingled with the realities of everyday life. The best type of
teaching bears in mind the desirability of affecting this
interconnection. It puts the student in the habitual attitude of
finding points of contact and mutual bearings.”
– J O H N D E W E Y, D E M O C R A C Y A N D E D U C AT I O N
47. All of this has forced professors here to think carefully
about what, exactly, they’re supposed to be doing. How
do you develop a course in which students learn to be
innovative? What is the role of the instructor if he is no
longer the authority in the classroom? How do you
evaluate students when there are no right answers? And
what is innovation, anyway?
