Human Factors of XR: Using Human Factors to Design XR Systems
Discover the 5 Steps to Experimentation
1. Discover, Explore, Play, Learn,
Love: encouraging a culture of
Anthony Molaro, MBA, MLIS, PhD
Candidate
Associate Dean of Library and
Instructional Services, Prairie State
2. Loving new technology, programs and
services is the end of a process. In this
session we will walk through the five steps
of experimentation spending time on each
of the steps: discovery, exploration, playing,
learning and loving (or hating). We will
focus on technology tools that improve
services to our library members, but this
session will apply equally for face-to-face
interactions as well as virtual interactions.
3. It is not just about technology

4. Its about you creating

5. Its about you make connections

20. 1 zettabyte = 1,000,000,000 terabytes
That’s 11.5 terabytes for every man, woman, and
child.

21. “As much as our television, radios, and
movie theaters would have us believe
otherwise, information consumption is
as active an experience as eating is; in
order for us to live healthy lives, we
must move our information
consumption habits from the passive
background of channel surfing into the
foreground of conscious selection.”

22. It’s there, waiting to be discovered

27. Questions to ask
• Will this benefit library members?
• Will they use it?
• Who else can provide it?
• Will this benefit the library organization?
• Will this benefit me?
• Do you think this will last more than 5
minutes?
28. Its better to explore together

30. Create a technology ritual

31. Play— the capacity to experiment with one’s surroundings as
a form of problem-solving.

32. Play is about trying something new

33. Have a play date

34. It can be scary and fun at the same time

35. Sometimes you just have to pick it up with wide-eyes

36. Even if you fail the first time

37. Questions to ask
• Is it easy to use?
• Can I train staff to use it?
• Can I train library members to use it?
• Can it be integrated into our current
offerings?
• How does it fit?
38. “Play is the basis for cultivating imagination and innovation.”

40. One must learn by doing the thing, for though you think
you know it, you have no certainty until you try.

42. Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created
through the transformation of experience. Knowledge
results from the combination of grasping experience and
transforming it.

43. Keep a technology journal

53. We provide them with all the tools and training to be their own producers

54. Google Example
Google engineers are given 20% of their time
to work on projects that personally excite
them.
Ask your boss to give you 2 hours per week
to experiment.
55. What happened to this?

Its about you creating and looking at things differently\n
Forge connections between people; between you and your library members\n
Why do I think this is important?\nI believe that libraries are at a tipping point.\nWe can go the way of borders book stores; or we can become what I think we were destine to.\n
\n
\n
\n
Yes, I’m telling you to be a kid again. Look at the world with fresh eyes. Make connections between different tools and your those you serve.\n
\n
The first step in discovering new ideas or tools is to open your mind. Beck provided several awesome tips this morning to aid in that.\nFind solititude\nPractice your morning pages\n
Step two is unlocking your heart. Over time, some of our hearts have become jaded and hardened. \nOthers have unjustly criticized us.\nNo body wants to get heart, so we seal our heart and stop trying.\n
The best method to discover new ideas and tools is to engage the conversation that occurs all around you. Talk to friends and coworkers. Talk to awesome librarians. Talk to people outside of the library community. Many of these tools are born out there.\n
Read about cool technology\n
Scan the horizon. What are your kids playing with? What do people walking in your doors use at home?\nDo you know that all tools aren’t created equal? Twitter is used by more 30-somethings.\n
\n
Again, get outside of the library.\nApple Store\n
Sometimes, you just have to stop consuming information.\nDissertation example.\n
\n
There is a wonderful new book out. It equates healthy information consumption to healthy dieting.\nWhile it focuses on consumption, \nI would like to remind us that a healthy lifestyle includes exercise.\nInformation exercise is the creation process.\n
\n
\n
Exploring something is done in your mind. It’s a thinking endeavor. \n
\n
\n
\n
Start a technology committee and talk about stuff you are hearing about.\nBeck mentioned a pinnup wall, I would encourage you and your tech committee to use a pinup wall or pinterest to capture all the ideas and tools you want to explore.\n
This is the best part.\nPlay with the tools.\nExpect to fail! \n
When you are playing with new technology do it away from your desk.\nWhy do so many people try stuff out at the Apple store?\nIt’s a space designed to encourage play.\n
You don’t learn a foreign language without trying it.\nThe same is true with technology tools.\n
Play is also about trying something that failed miserably. \nDon’t ever say we tried it and it didn’t work, try again.\nLearn from failure don’t hide from it.\n
Yes, I’m telling you to schedule a play date.\nBeck mentioned handholding as part of the learning process. Sometimes you need someone to help you see how to play with a certain tool\n
\n
\n
It can take a while to hit the nail on the head.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Think about your kids, your spouse, your significant others.\nYou reflect on what they are.\n
\n
Now a confession:\nI tricked you into discussing learning theory.\n
\n
Libraries and books are going to be here for a really long time\n
\n
\n
\n
But don’t do it at your desk.\n
Did you see the video this morning about the young man doing a Ruth Goldberg machine? Bring that level of excitement. \n
Celebrate with a happy dance. \n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What technologies are you considering, playing with, adopting?\n
